For this review, I take this opportunity to pay homage to a great legend Gil Scott Heron as much artistically as humanly, a great poet and singer. He offered us excellent works, especially in the 70s, and he's a bit our first rapper in history. God knows how important hip hop is to me.

So how do we approach and what do we think of a new re-imagining of the incredible album I'm New Here: First of all, I'd like to say that the tribute is very successful. In my opinion it's impossible to do only ... read more

We're New Again is a classy Jazz record that greatly pays tribute to a man like Gil Scott-Heron but despite his relatively short length, it fails to entertain for its entirety.

I just can't get enough of this tasteful mix of jazz and soul and poetry and that voice! This is the first time I felt motivated to weigh in with a rating and review here. I didn't want to spend a lot of time deciding on a number so I just went all in.
That track, 'Where did the night go'? It feels like he wrote that about me! If I'm up too late tonight, it's his fault. Mostly McCraven's fault for bringing him back to my attention with such a fine groovy sound.

How brave and full of confidence (or stupidity) you need to be to try to reimagining "I'm New Here" (2010)? I mean, there are thousands of shitty albums out there to try to do something new with them, but no, you decided to choose one of the perfect ones. Ok, it is not an easy task, but let's be honest, McCraven proved his point, He took this perfect album and gave us something new, his own vision of the last Scott-Heron record.

But, even when you need to recognize McCraven did a ... read more

[62.92] I see to it that I've never been an actual jazz fan, though this peaks some of my interests as it involves multiple genres. The narrator, which is the first title that comes to mind, seals the atmosphere of what could be great studying or cafe music. I enjoyed tipping my toes in the water in this one, though I don't see it in my future diving into this specific sound. It lacks something that I need in other music.

I really wish I liked this more than I do, but I don't.

I feel like a lot was missed out of this. What could have been a well polished reimagining was just "meh" if you ask me. Not as much of this reimagining is compelling enough to capture the heart of where the originals were going.

It's a nice reimagination.

Gil Scott-Heron is a music legend that is no longer with us, but throughout his artistic career he created impactful soul, jazz and was best known for his spoken-word performance, which have many crediting him as a forebear to the hip hop scene to come. He released his final studio album I’m New Here back in 2010 and that album received tons of acclaim, along with a remix version by Jamie xx in 2011 and now jazz bandleader Makaya McCraven brings new life into the recording with his latest ... read more

I get when people (*cough* Fantano) say this takes from the energy of the original album. But I think the point here is to totally re-imagine it. Sounds beautiful to me. I can see why Gil fans might be turned off by this, yet I think you enjoy this album more if you go into it without the past in mind.

So it's like a remix album but with Jazz? Neat!

I don't know either of these people or the significance of this album but I thought it was simply okay. I mean it's good but didn't often tickle my fancy anything like The Comet Is Coming last year.

Having listened to Gil Scott-Heron's final album, I'm New Here, it's hard to imagine how that album could be matched with a reimagining. The trip-hop, acoustic and soul throughout that album is mixed in such an engaging way and to imagine those songs sounding different is a difficult task. How exactly would such freshly made songs be altered in a successful way? Makaya McCraven pays tribute here by not only recreating the sound of Scott-Heron but interweaving completely new elements and sounds ... read more

Let Scott rest in peace for God's sake! Jamie xx has done his part with a good mix and that's enough. this album is totally unnecessary. Yes, I heard the entire album "Reimagining" and it's S ks.

Funk in the poetry as Makaya tells it like it is in the harsh world of reality...
