a poetic statement solid as cement: complete with clever alliteration which correlates with numerological values. also, lana is an outstanding speaker, especially in the beginning.

Not gonna lie, Lana has had a rough year so far.

And that's ironic! A few months right after she released her critically-acclaimed near-masterpiece "Norman Fucking Rockwell!", she went on various petty tirades on Instagram about "what it means to be a female musician in the culture today." To be fair, in these posts, I think her wording was just so rushed and one-note that it came across in a manner that wasn't supposed to be interpreted. She was rightfully ridiculed by ... read more

Rating is 93/100. My score for this should not be compared / put on the same scale as the rest of my ratings. I took the rating off because I hated seeing it on my BEST OF 2020, this aint my fave project of 2020, lmao.

Anyways, the fact that the first official release from Lana Del Rey after her career-threatening social media tirades is a spoken word album is baffling, hilarious, and just peak Lana. After being painted by naysayers and even many of her own fans as a rich, cop loving ... read more

This woman could read me how to make a delicious french toast & it would still be emotional.

Sometimes it's not the music that matters most, it's the journey. And this journey of checking every 10 minutes for updates on where this album is has inspired me in more ways than words can explain. This is a beautiful piece of work by Lana Del Rey, an artist that is so ahead of the curve that she can announce a spoken word album and not even release it and we still come flocking to her. A timeless classic

Lana compiles genuinely interesting self-important sentiments backed by Jack Ant's sometimes drab, sometimes poignant production. My expectations were low, but some entries were surprisingly captivating and there were far fewer millenialisms than in her last album, which made for unbothered listening.

I jokingly compared Lana D to Lena D in my last review, but recent events have potentially damned her to that comparison. Somehow I listened agnostically to her persona(e) for the entirety of ... read more

You know what my favorite thing about Lana is? Her consistent storytelling. With every release more and more parts of a story unravels. No matter how old the story is and no matter how we know about it. Even if the story began as she was May Jailor. This project was all about extending those stories and giving them life. That is especially the case for "SportCruiser", where she has referenced so many things we already know, because she sang about them- except this time it was with ... read more

I guess it's good to listen to in the night or on a summery calm day...for some reassurance of relaxation but other than that I won't see myself listening to this over proper music albums.

Nevertheless, Lana's dreamy and heartbroken voice shines through along with her euphoric writing.

After her triumphant album "Norman fucking Rockwell" Lana Del Rey did not stop there and decided to release the first collection of poetry. With this collection she confirmed her skills as a poet, which can be traced from the album "Born to Die".
The entire collection consists of verses and poems that Lana reads. For a greater atmosphere and immersion of the listener, different instrumental parts are played in the background, and also, as in Lana's entire career, the ... read more

Her potent voice beautifully conveys the intimate, thought-provoking poetry over layered and fittingly lo-fi instrumentals. It's an otherworldly atmosphere to lose yourself in and open your mind to.

There was a big risk that this record would be a complete failure for Lana simply because it's spoken word.

Spoken word can be tricky. It can be captivating if the storytelling is enticing, but it always runs the risk of becoming stale and boring quite fast.

Thankfully, Lana has got more stories to tell than my grandma, so this album is great.

Not sure if I'll be coming back to this often but it makes me even more excited for her next record.

Lana releases her long-awaited spoken word album, an album I’ve been anticipating for a while, since it was announced. I was sure it was going to be a solid release, I mean it’s Lana, she’s an amazing writer, and that was shown splendidly on her previous full-length record Norman Fucking Rockwell! So does Violet Bent Backwards Over The Grass hold up to the hype I gave it? Yes actually.

Now I wasn’t expecting this to be another NFR, but I was intrigued to see what ... read more

I didn't think I'd be reviewing poetry on a music website, but there's something about this spoken word album from Lana Del Rey. It's not enough that she sings tales of woe, now she's taken a dive and chosen to recite them. While the poems tread familiar ground for Lana, they do add another layer to her lyricism and songwriting.

"Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is a project that goes far beyond just a spoken word album. In reality, Violet is not only Del Rey’s first album of the genre, it’s also her first published book. This one, initially available only in audiobook, contains thirty poems, of which only fourteen were chosen to be read by Lana on this album, which end up being a kind of intimate, philosophical and profound literary session. Produced by Del Rey’s longtime friend Jack ... read more

Unfortunately, but in all of this I miss this musical soul. I appreciate the courage, but unfortunately I will never like this artistic form because it departs too much from the music itself.

I don't rate this album because I dont know how.
