CRITIC REVIEWS

Rolling Stone

Songs of Innocence is a triumph of dynamic, focused renaissance: 11 tracks of straightforward rapture about the life-saving joys of music, drawing on U2's long palette of influences and investigations of post-punk rock, industrial electronics and contemporary dance music.

This is the kind of album that could just make you believe in their legacy all over again.

A.V. Club

On Songs Of Innocence, U2 don’t seem compelled to recycle past glories in order to reach for relevance. That’s a tiny—but notable—victory.

75
Pretty Much Amazing

This is no disaster, nor is it a masterpiece. Songs of Innocence is a competent U2 album, always a good thing.

50
PopMatters

Each song has the feel of an insular experiment that feels completely disconnected from what comes both before and after it.

46
Pitchfork

Bono may have self-deprecatingly described Songs of Innocence as “the blood, sweat and tears of some Irish guys...in your junk mail,” but it’s not even that interesting—it’s just a blank message.

40
NME

This is a serious mis-step that might win a week's worth of good publicity, but could foreshadow a year's worth of bad.

Exclaim!

If U2 was ever cool or exciting, that spark has been absent for a good 20 years, and with Songs of Innocence, they've never sounded so ordinary or cloying.

40
Drowned in Sound

It’s a series of mid-tempo songs with fitful sputters of classic U2-ishness that never really come to much.

35
Under The Radar

It's not that the songs on here are necessarily terrible; certainly there's nothing to plumb the depths of "Elevation" or "Get on your Boots," but rather that Songs of Innocence is a soulless and unwanted lump of shiny plastic.

Songs Of Innocence is a neutered, soporific album.

Letting so much room to mediocrity leaves us with a powerless and cheap copycat of themselves.
Is this really a U2 album?

It was a surprise this album is now released this way, the most surprising is that it is still a wonderful album dropping everything bad that has been done on "No Line on the Horizon", the songs have a pop more grip yet maintains a pleasant climate from beginning to end, moreover the music has an extremely addictive footprint, U2 in this new work in behind a decent height your work.
