Moments to an Elegy essentially strips away anything that made The Smashing Pumpkins, the Smashing Pumpkins, more than ever before. This is a basic mainstream alternative rock band album, with nothing really interesting in the way lyrically either. If this was a 90s The Smashing Pumpkins record, they would not have gotten big, like they are today, due to the lack of songwriting abilities, even if there is nothing awful here, and just the very bland sonic approach. The Pumpkins ninth studio album wasn't really anything special especially after Oceania. Monuments to an Elegy picks up right where Oceania left off by further exploring the Pumpkins new light hearted sound.
