Behind the frightening sleeve lies the sombre biography of a lost soul in the fallen kingdom of sex, drugs and alcohol and, it was right there that Midlake discovered him and helped him transform the thorns of his personal crown into little, chamber-folk jewels of melancholia, so evocative and so beautiful.

John Grant's debut album is a narrative of emotion, sadness and grief, but also humour and sarcasm. Here, the singer-songwriter displays lyricism skill and a really accurate artistic sense, with beautiful arrangements, sharp writing and a strong, precise voice. The first half of the record sounds more flashy and concise than the second, but overall, this is a really heartfelt and well-orchestrated album, with varied instrumentation and creative lines, from a most promising artist.

O começo é extremamente fraco, tanto em questão de harmonia quanto as letras com um humor que não me apetecia. A segunda parte melhora bastante e vai seguindo por boas experimentações.
