Whiplash sees James steer away from the post-punk influenced indie rock on their earlier releases towards something closer to typical late 90s alternative rock. For its first five songs, it's a largely successful approach, but on the test of the album, it feels like the band is trying too hard to sound alternative. The result is a pretentious techno-rock sound on some of the songs and bleak alternative tunes on the rest.

Worth a listen
A confused return to the cozy mainstream and back, with the help of a whiplash that didn't finally manage to tidy up the mess and put things in their right place.
