The Guardian
Brian Christinzio’s fifth album as BC Camplight is a marvel, in which currents cut across each other in a half hour or so that roils with anxiety, stuns with beauty and, occasionally, provokes laughter.
The Line of Best Fit

Sure, his prowess in mope-pop makes for a voyeuristic listen, but on Shortly After Take Off he invites us to take a twitch of the curtain obscuring the life of Brian from the outside in, and it’s a spellbinding and utterly wonderful thing.

Written from the heart and dredged from pop music's boneyard, Shortly After Takeoff feels like the album Christinzio has been working toward his whole career.

What makes Shortly After Take Off work is the attention to detail, both musically and lyrically.

Loud and Quiet

Above all, Shortly After Takeoff sounds better than any other BC Camplight record. As he moves through quiet balladry to soaring gameshow synth-pop and crooner rock’n’roll, Christinzio’s vulnerability is always rendered by melodramatic strings and a charmingly lysergic production.

The Telegraph
Christinizio has an adventurous style, featuring drily amusing confessional lyrics and sweet melodies on shapeshifting songs assembled with constantly surprising production choices.
God Is in the TV

Shortly After Take Off is one of the best albums to listen to right now during lockdown. Although it’s a tad too short, its genre-shifting wildness is sure to entertain anyone experiencing boredom. And as mental health problems increase due to social restrictions, BC Camplight is here to show you that you can tackle the illness with a good dose of zany humour.

Beats Per Minute
It’s clear Christinzio isn’t one to lean into the tortured artist narrative. He’s instead opted to salvage what he could from 2018’s wreckage and rebuilt himself in the process, documenting this on a record that’s as fragmented as it is fascinating.
The Skinny

Shortly After Takeoff is still BC Camplight’s most reflective and most emotionally engaging album to date.

The Arts Desk

Abrupt musical left turns are part of his make-up, but Shortly After Takeoff is difficult to get through as it's such an uncomfortable listen.

É um disco agradável mas nada demais, a única música incrível é "I Want To Be In The Mafia", as outras são bem monótonas. Eu gostei da produção e da voz do cantor.

Highlight: Back to Work

Made me think of:
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Baxter Dury
Animal Collective
This is a really puzzling mish-mash of sweet pop melodies and odd psychedelia, but BC Camplight pulls it off thanks to his expressive vocals and some revealing but genuinely hilarious songwriting.

This is sure to slip under a lot of people’s radars, but hopefully someone might see this and give it a shot or two.

Favorite Tracks: I ONLY DRINK WHEN I’M DRUNK, Cemetery Lifestyle, Shortly After Takeoff, Arm Around Your Sadness, Born to Cruise

Least Favorite Track: Back To Work
The quirky, tongue in cheek act works on some level, but I'm left feeling he's trying to hard to be clever and look casual while doing so. In the end, the songs sound much the same, none rising too much above the others and never drawing me in. The often too twee voice doesn't help.

Standouts: Ghosthunting, Back to Work, Cemetery Lifestyle, I Want to Be in the Mafia

Dropouts: Arm Around Your Sadness, Born to Cruise
