Subaru Stevens is a fantastic artist and a God-tier human being. I love this man so much.

That said, when he announced a 'New Age' album, I wasn't sure how to feel about it. On the one hand, saying something negative about such a pure soul feels like an offense to almighty God. But on the other, I would be surprised to find myself liking New Age hippy bullshit no matter who makes it.

The result is kind of what I was afraid of. It's an album that contains nothing of what I ordinarily love ... read more

Decent

I’m an ambient whore, I gotta say it. I’ll basically enjoy any ambient album you give me, at least to a certain degree. That’s why I somewhat like this one. While it feels like too many ideas trying to come together for a consistent project, I can’t get past some of them being super cool and relaxing as separate tracks.

FAV TRACKS: I’d rather not list 21 tracks

From my perspective, this album is a step up from something like Enjoy Your Rabbit, Sufjan Stevens first effort in the realm of electronic-based instrumental pieces. Where that album was glitchy and eccentric mess that often had no emotional center, this is far more toned down and atmospheric effort that feels far more grounded in its sound. Sufjan was clearly less familiar with the sounds he was working with on Enjoy Your Rabbit, but had a plethora of creative ideas - call that album a ... read more

I've been a fan of Sufjan for a while now, but with the release of the Decalogue and now this, it feels like he's just putting off his next proper project, possibly out of fear of any critical or fan backlash, especially after a string of brilliant records.
I'm going to compare Aporia to the album Mixing Colours by Brian Eno and Roger Eno: Both projects are Ambient in nature and are made by a duo who are well acquainted with one another: Brian and Roger are brothers, Lowell and Sufjan are ... read more

Sufjan Stevens is an American indie folk singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, and this is his 9th studio album. Aporia, without including 2017's collaboration, Planetarium, is the follow up to Sufjan's last solo record, Carrie and Lowell, one that along with Illinois, are critically acclaimed, and albums I both personally love. This is another collaboration of sorts, this time with his stepfather, Lowell Brams. Sufjan Stevens, though has been primarily in the folk territory, along with some ... read more

I mean, it's fine, I guess. It sure as hell isn't the best thing Sufjan's ever put out, but I wasn't expecting it to be. Not great, but I enjoy it for what it is.

Sufjan Stevens is a top tier artist for me and I have him as my second favorite artist of all time behind none the other then Kanye West. Sufjan in this album takes an ambient/electronic direction and incorporates some great sounds that create a immaculate atmosphere. This album is nothing short of MAGICAL. And while I do want to hear Sufjans vocals again. I’ll appreciate tf outta his versatility and creative talent as an artist. GREAT GREAT GREAT

Aporia continually improves as each track passes. Through its droning summation, this album achieves something hardly fitting into words. Every song equally functions as a standalone, while simultaneously flowing together. Sufjan labored these collaborative soundscapes into a premeditated sci-fi-esque result.

Sufjan Stevens latest album sees him pair up with Lowell Brams to create a New Age Ambient track which is bursting with idea but sadly it lacks focus or direction to maintain these ideas into coherent tracks. None this album is not bad by any means and in fact i enjoy quite a few tracks on here with What It Takes easily being the stand out track for me. However, this album feels unnecessary too long to fill the exploration this album set it self up for and overall messy with not true ... read more

Inconsistent in every way possible. If you want to release an ambient album ... don't do like aporia. Ok, the sounds are beautiful, but what the point to have good material if you don't know how to blend what you bring, how to construct a cohesive track and how to do an album with 21 songs ?

A missed opportunity to do something pure and crystaline.

wait 40 minutes to hear sufjan’s voice sing one sentence over instrumentation like this, wistfully sigh bc you thought you were ordering Age of Adz 2, repeat.

Aporia is too varied to make one generalization. Parts of it I feel like I’ve heard before, parts of it intrigued me, parts of it I found beautiful, and parts of it I found almost unlistenable. Maybe it would be good as a film score, but as an album, it lacks coherence and unity. It feels more like a playlist; no two songs on this record sound like they belong next to each other. The random appearance of vocals on The Runaround just make it even more jumbled. Despite all this, I ... read more

Been with Sufjan since the VERY beginning, one of my all time favorites, but as a somewhat frequent ambient listener, this is really not a strong entry into the genre for Stevens and Brams.

I mean yeah it's not great by Sufjan Stevens standards but those standards have proven to be quite high. Its an overall somewhat pleasant left field turn from him and one that has enough pretty moment to mostly make up for some of the less interesting and sloppy ideas presented.

As a huge Sufjan fan this new age , ambient project is pretty confusing , I wanna like it becuase it’s Sufjan , the production is textured, and it’s definitely not bad , But the lack of Sufjan’s artistic touch is super noticeable and this project overall just feels bland , I don’t I’ll be coming back often but I’ll give it another go or 2 to see if it starts to click with me
