A couple years after "Saturday Night Wrist" released, Deftones were recording for their sixth album "Eros". All of a sudden, they had been struck with the tragic loss of their bassist Chi Cheng. He got involved in a serious car accident, resulting in a coma and a death just five years later. With their beloved friend gone, they scrapped the project. This album is such a grower! This was my least favorite Deftones album because I thought it was pretty basic, considering how amazing I thought Saturday Night Wrist was. But now I admit I was wrong. This isn't basic Deftones, it's BANGER Deftones!
A modern day masterpiece from the masters of progressive post-nu hardcoregaze

After finishing up with Saturday Night Wrist I took a break to do some other stuff and get some food and stuff. A couple of hours later I came back to listen to Diamond Eyes.

I think I'm starting to understand what Deftones are doing here. They know that White Pony was their seminal album so for each album they're just putting different variations on the same sound. Wow, this album is absolutely amazing! I hadn't ever heard this one in full before, but most of the songs just had really memorable riffs.

The group unfortunately lost their bassist at the time, and during his time in a coma, the band took a break and then created this, which goes to show what they can do given time. It has really beefy tunes as well as the softer songs. While it doesn't strike the best balance of the two, it is a force to be reckoned with. It's a great Deftones experience ... read more
