CRITIC REVIEWS

AllMusic
He's not racing after the past, nor is he afraid to seem floridly fussy: he's reveling in his ascendency to the position of one of rock's wise old men.

American Songwriter
Thankfully, even if there remain clear musical ties to his past, Gallagher continues to writes sharp, instantly memorable, never cheesy choruses.

Sputnikmusic

Chasing Yesterday is crammed full of natural sounding songs by a man who has only ever known one way of making music, and long may it continue.

70
NME
'Chasing Yesterday' has its flaws, but they’re far outnumbered by moments where it succeeds in catching up with its titular quarry.
70
Drowned in Sound

Gallagher has definitely evolved. You get the sense of an artist having grown up a bit: Chasing Yesterday is a tasteful, coffee-table record of decent melodies and a pleasantly Seventies-ish cinematic feel.

70
The Line of Best Fit

Chasing Yesterday doesn’t break new ground for its author, despite adding saxophones and a healthy dose of funk, but when he plays to his strengths he continues to be a masterful tunesmith, if not a genius lyricist.

Exclaim!
It sounds like the kind of album Ryan Adams would enjoy. Whether or not you find that notion attractive will define how you feel about this record.
70
FasterLouder

While Chasing Yesterday may not be the record that defines his career, it showcases his intention to push boundaries and explore new frontiers rather than purvey the same style until it becomes stale.

70
Rolling Stone
It's hardly rocket science. It is a great ride worth repeating.
70
Clash

The most impressive thing about ‘Chasing Yesterday’ is the playfulness that’s woven throughout it.

67
A.V. Club
The album’s defining trait might be “polite,” which is not necessarily the best quality for a freewheeling rock album to cultivate.
60
DIY
Thieving like a magpie from his own box of tricks, there’s no denying that Gallagher is a songwriter from the very top of his class.
60
musicOMH

It’s understandable that he wants to stress how he’s moved on from Oasis, and in Chasing Yesterday he continues to show a wider range as a songwriter, but innovation ain’t his thing.

60
The Skinny
Not necessarily a progression, but an indication that Noel is still able to apply his trade and make microscopic improvements to the formula as he ages.
60
The Guardian

Chasing Yesterday really isn’t a bad album as such: it’s alright, it has its moments, it’ll do.

59
Pitchfork

The moody, mid-tempo torpor of Chasing Yesterday only emphasizes the fact that, as Gallagher’s songs have turned more narrative and descriptive in his later years, they’ve become more emotionally vague.

58
Consequence of Sound

Whether we’re talking guitars, lyrical proclamations, or haymakers to siblings, Gallagher remains as bold as ever on Chasing Yesterday, avoiding subtlety and embracing more familiar, dramatic gestures.

50
Pretty Much Amazing

While he understands and utilizes the power of simplicity in music, on Chasing Yesterday this simplicity often gives way to idleness.

50
PopMatters
Noel Gallagher has basically made an album with the format of a random Oasis song generator.

Not too much to say here but In The Heat Of The Moment, The Dying Of The Light and Ballad Of The Mighty I are all really good alt rock numbers. The rest are somewhat forgettable.

Хороший релиз старшего брата, как-то стал больше ценить их творчество по отдельности.

More than decent effort from Noel. Couple of very good songs on here, and most definitely better than his first solo effort.

Favorite moments: Riverman, While The Song Remains The Same, Freaky Teeth.

Another good album from NGHFB with some good songwriting. It is a bit safe though and you would expect a little more from the former Oasis man.
