it sucks trying to re-review this because i literally have nothing else to say that no one else has already said. amazing album, but it's hard to describe without sounding like i'm preaching to the choir yknow
The problem is not Fantano, he could give a 0 to this album and it still would be legitimate because it's his opinion, the problem is that when he gives a 7 all the Fantano fanboys that didn't even listen to the album will start giving this a 5 or 6 or a 7. It's a toxic fandom and that's a problem and it's not Fantano's problem, if you want to blame the lower score blame on that community.
I also bet that people take his reviews too seriosly I don't see people complaning so much about reviews from Rolling Stone or even Pitchfork.
I'm new to this website and I've seen there's lot of discussions about Fantano. I follow his channel, sure he likes to give bizarre ratings to few albums but it never changed my opinion about the album I loved. Currents is a 10 for me and Fantano can't change that by giving it a 7. Also, That's his own opinion which he explained it in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PECeceTOCU8. He said that he never go "technical" for the album and it's just his preference or liking of the album, the score is based on.
I was actually very interested to see what he would say and while he pointed what I could find negative in the album (a bit too crafty, not that huge sound, not the most experimental thing, not enough cohesive, etc) ... his justifications are bizarre ... is it the point to do the most crazy album ? No. Tracks have no variations ? Well this wasn't a complain in Rina and Dua lipe albums ... he analyzed very specific tracks rather than interesting in the entire message throught the tracks. He also said that she didn't push enough the things ... which is pretty funny because For Her is his least fav track but she did push herself emotionally A LOT. The tom waits comparison ...
I see what he wants to say but the justifications : half-baked.
I feel like Fiona's older fans are the ones that are not liking this that much. I have never been much of a fan, I don't dislike any of her albums but The Idler Wheel was the first one I really enjoyed before this. And this just blew my mind.
Are people really getting worked up over a 7, which is a passable rating? Or better yet, getting worked up over someone else’s personal opinion and views?
People out here acting like Fantano gave it a 3 or something. At what point did a 7/10 become a negative score? Just because it isn't as desirable as a 9 or a 10 doesn't mean it isn't positive. And even still, who the fuck cares what some bald guy on the internet thinks about the album? If you love the album and think it's one of the greatest you've ever heard then him giving it a 7 shouldn't change that for you. And if the user score drops because of it, so what? It may be annoying, but it's not like that's going to detract from how much you personally enjoy the album, right?
I’m done. I unfollowed Anthony. Thanks for ruining this album’s legendary status that it deserves, guess it’ll drop to a frickin 84 or something now because people are gonna think “oh maybe it’s bad.” I don’t understand how consistently, females in music make improvements off of an album he adores, and then he doesn’t like it. I’m convinced he’s an idiot. Mitski, Angel Olsen, FKA Twigs, now Fiona Apple (ON HER MASTERPIECE). I’m done.
Because I'm here to talk about music, if you like unconventional and punchy production, try "Who kill" from Tune-Yards. She may not have the same impact in the lyrical department but sonically this is also very bold and the album I think that is the most "close" in term of production (Ok this is NOT the same but you see the idea ... I hope haha !)
To give some perspective, there are only 11 albums from the entire decade of the 2010's that scored higher than an 87... and 2 of those albums didn't have many scores. This album scoring an 87 will most likely put it among the top 10-20 albums of this current decade when all is said and done.
so what will be the reaction if the baldman decides to give it a 8 or less? apparently the only thing important about this album is the user score and his for y'all, nobody is actually talking about music lol
yeah so you people apparently don’t know good groundbreaking music if it slaps you in the face. 87 now good lord. hopefully Fantano gives it a 10 so you lot start thinking “NEVERMIND IT IS A 10 ISNT IT OOPS”
NME is literaly on crack, last year they gave OZZY FUCKING OSBOURNE STAR OF TROLLS WORLD TOUR a 100, but hey, Fiona Apple? nah bro, shes sitting with the 80 crowd
All the haters of the album are going to be quaking once Fantano drops a 9 or 10 on this. He’s gonna love it for it’s messages and innovation probably.
I have to say that the whole rating thing, as funny at it can be when it's healthy, is becoming painful to watch since some releases such as The strokes. Hype is another thing but the rating are getting on the nerve of some users and is so biased by some overly negative and positive waves. Not that it was not a thing before, but men ... what is so interesting in the neighbourhood ?with an artist like Fiona, I expect to see actual talking about the album, some quotes or facts about the production, the lyrics, the instrumentation. Not a wikipedia page about her career, not "oh I like it, see ya" then being bombed in first page (no shade, just truth). Maybe my expectation are completely delusional and stupid, whatever. Just saying with hot tea
I know there are people down there giving this absurdly low scores just to get the average down and saying amateurish kiddy shit like “This just a women screaming and wierd shit happens for 51 minites XP”. Multiple listens are something you probably have time for. It’s also, you know, what album listeners should actually do in the first place.
i will hate you all if by the end of all this the album doesn’t stay above at LEAST an 86. really should be an 88-90 average but i will take an 86 at least. anything less and you’re dead to me.
I remember she said she was considering a photo of Harvey Weinstein with his walker as the album cover and thinking at the time that that was a little on the nose but, eh.
well I was already anticipating this last year but was alarmed it's coming this week with a weird article interviewing Fiona about the album in which it also included Fiona Apple talking about how toxic her relationship with Paul Thomas Anderson was. Lol what type of article is that?
