Despite the added textures, these are what one might expect from a legendary punk band now grown into something even wiser than their first albums.
It's a blessing, then, that Red Barked Tree, their latest export, stands up to the original trilogy better than any intervening album since 1988's softly sinister A Bell Is a Cup Until It Is Struck.
The most remarkable thing about Red Barked Tree is how, 34 years into their career, Wire are still eager to redefine their essence.
Red Barked Tree is a solid effort by a band that’s been creating a sound for so long that they practically define it.
Red Barked Tree is as quietly diverse as 2008’s Object 47, and similar in form, featuring prickly, probing pop tracks that recall the band’s heyday while spinning the core elements in different directions.
Red Barked Tree is another strong effort, and while Wire is still making music that shatters expectations, after 30 years they're sounding a lot like the mainstream rockers they once despised.
On Wire's twelfth studio album, the band embraces the minimalism and simple pop hooks that make their post-Pink Flag albums so appealing.
It has it's moments, and it's a generally good and competent record, just nowhere near as good as their previous material, but honestly, nothing will ever top that 3 album run they had, and I think the band should be proud of that already
As for this though, even if it is mostly a bit run of the mill, it's still a good album, can't hate on this, it's impressive alone that these guys are making good music at all after making music for 30+ years at this point
While constantly switching things up with each release, Wire goes back to some of their punk rock roots with Red Barked Tree. The LP contains a mix of styles throughout that kind of represents their changes and adaptations to new sounds. It’s a good LP, but personally I don’t see much that really separates it from other punk rock projects like this, especially over 30 years after their original punk releases.
