this is beefheart’s best work. trout mask can overshadow greatness with its perplexing eccentrics. where the chaos came unannounced once before, now we have composure!
Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) is the return to form for Captain Beefheart; I can only describe this as Trout Mask Replica but straightforward. Powerfully delivered, Shiny Beast cemented the Captain's reputation as one of the oddest and influential artists of all time.
A great return to form for Beefheart. Just some good old Beefheart craziness. It's not nearly as strange as "Trout Mask" or "Decals", but it's definitely weirder than his more blues rock stuff. There's not much to say about this album besides how solid it is. There are a few underwhelming moments, but there's really no bad material here. It's just fun.

Brilliant and criminally underrated. One of Beefheart's finest achievements.
