I am torn on this album. It is nice to hear the band maturing and expanding their sound into a softer indie rock direction while still holding on to the emotion of their early work. But it sounds like the band has growing pains, occasionally making a very good dark and emotional track only to be followed by generic early 00s alternative rock ballads.
After listening to this, I'm starting to see why nobody really cares about The Get Up Kids' discography past STWHA. While I do appreciate that the band made a different album, it's just lacking in the hard hitting emotional energy that their previous two albums had. A lot of these songs feel like they accomplish the same thing, or that they were just made to be sappy emo songs.
