California X aren’t the first band to batter eardrums in the pursuit of pop perfection, but they are pretty good at it.
Consequence of Sound

Nights in the Dark picks up where its predecessor left off, but its scope and ambition are impressively wider.

California X have a way to go as songwriters, but Nights in the Dark shows they're maturing into a top-flight heavy indie band.

‘Nights In The Dark’ has taken two years to surface and is a surprising diversion.

The nine-song Nights in the Dark finds the Amherst, Mass., quartet dialing down the fuzz and traveling to the desert—at least psychically and spiritually—returning with moody instrumentals, darker pyrotechnics, even longer hair, a piano.

On Nights in the Dark, California X are comfortable in their own skin and playing at the peak of their powers, but the album would have fared best as a pared down EP nonetheless.

No Ripcord

What Nights possesses in skillful precision and tight musicianship it lacks in songwriting polish, though it’s easy to dismiss when it hits you with its triumphant highs.

The Skinny
That they’re almost certainly loser punk nerds posing as lunkhead caveman rockers only adds to their delightful, if not yet world-beating charm.
The 405
There's no doubting their technical ability, but it counts for little this time around; the hooks that seemed to be the cornerstone of their songwriting last time out are missing in action on this occasion.
Yes, I overrate this album. But I don't give a shit, it's great!
I had good expectations about the band's second album, but what they delivered was a full disc of songs without thanks and repetitive, features three songs that are good over the rest and sameness.
