Too bad Kanye — who’s also a fan — already used the title last fall, because Goblin is one Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
Brash and unwieldy as it seems on the surface, Goblin is a deliberately crafted work of art, one of the densest and most provocative statements independent rap has produced in years.
A massive spoonful of marvelous hip-hop medicine, of the most unnerving, hyperreal humour you may well ever hear.
Odd Future? Odd Freakshow is more like it, but if you’ve ever wondered what an inspired mash of Three 6 Mafia, Pharell Williams, and Kool Keith would sound like if they absolutely hated you, then Goblin is the sweet pain you crave.
This is mostly clever, intelligently designed rap, intended to give a greater conceptual sense than mere boasts and anecdotes, which is something too often unseen these days.
Goblin is founded on hip-hop traditions, but Tyler brings a lot to the rap game.
Iif this is Tyler as slacker, just what the fuck is Tyler operating at full capacity going to be like?
Tyler, the Creator ... achieves an engrossing dystopian vision of Hip Hop that refuses to compromise to what fans and industry critics demand of him.
What is here is more promise than delivery, yet it's still a game-changing record for indie hip-hop.
One thing Tyler can’t be accused of is a shortage of ideas, but the lack of quality control ends up being somewhat problematic.
For better or for worse or for somewhere in between, Goblin’s flaws come hand in hand with its strengths.
For every clever twist there’s a murder fantasy or a viciously descriptive bit of misogyny waiting in the next phrase.
Tyler’s attempts to repeatedly lionize his demons don’t land anywhere near the target of innovation or originality that he banks on.
His approach may or may not be your bag, but the energy in his music, his performances, his general fuck-you attitude is infectious.
Cast its most unsavoury numbers aside, and Goblin’s a very listenable, very well realised album from an artist whose career is only getting started.
Then you have a track like ‘Her’, which is the lamest kind of sub-Atmosphere emo-rap, and you wonder what the point of Tyler following Bastard up so quickly was when he had so little to add.
Here they were, blowing the roof off their live television debut, and the most exciting thing about it wasn’t any id-tapping pathos and/or shock-tactics, but just the straight-up fun they were having. It felt communal, inclusive, and (yes) worthy of hype. It felt, in short, like exactly the opposite of Goblin.
SHORT REVIEW #15
‘Goblin’ is a conflicting record. It’s an edgy hardcore hip-hop album that has awful lyrics and goes on for way too long. Tyler is very unlikable on this album, and the parts with him screaming and yelling were aggravating. But, it also has some really nice cuts, such as “She”, featuring the incredibly talented Frank Ocean, and the famous single “Yonkers”. Also, I somehow loved the “bad” songs of this album, such as ... read more
Great concept, horrible album. Soooo much filler. It’s mostly a parody of itself intentionally or not. It drags for soooooo long. I wish it was just a bit shorter. I don’t see myself coming back
The production is awful. It’s all shitty drums in mass reverb that creates a shitty cloud of low ends for Tyler to make every single song about the same thing. Seriously the amount of bars about masturbation... it’s an achievement.
My only enjoyment came from it being so bad ... read more
