Mayhem avoids being simply standard by making subtle changes in their sound throughout the album and not falling into a rut or repeating themselves, as too many other black metal bands tend to do.
Time to get into more of this classic black metal!
Doing some research into this band, it's honestly a miracle that this album is anywhere near as great as it is. With as many problems there were during the making of this album, the many disgusting things that happened, this is one of those albums (and bands) that I just had a feeling wouldn't work for me. i’m so sick of metal reviewers giving every extreme metal album high scores, it’s like these critics have never rated any sludge metal album below a 6.
if you plotted the average metal reviewer’s scores of albums, sorted by genre, across their histories, the scores would be so skewed to the right they’d serve kebabs with them if they could.
is it not possible to rate an extreme metal album below a 5?
The first time I heard this it just did not stick with me even in the slightest. I honestly think now this is the perfect album for people who aren't fans and are trying to get into black metal. The atmosphere and darkness of this record is definitely there and I think this record has one of the coldest and most miserable guitar tones in all of metal.
