One 20 minutes track of post rock magic. A companion song to the shorter Rock Action release (short by Mogwai standards at least), My Father, My King is based of a Jewish hymnal melody. A couple short years later the post rock craze, which had dominating the indie scene for a few years (GYBE, Sigur Ros, Explosions In The Sky), started to fade away. This is an essential song, and band, from that golden era. These guys were especially loud in the live setting.
Wow. Just amazing! It's a great change of pace from their last record with some epic composition and instrumentation and one hell of a noisy ending!
An experience so thrilling, with a payoff so devastating, you don't even realize it's a 20 minute song with 5 minutes of ambient harsh noise. It's like the ending is the much deserved aftermath after a mass destruction. One of the most grand displays of pure musical force I can think of.
My Father, The Gentle Heart Of This Land. May You Rest In Peace...
