Here's a record where Steve Albini diehards really dissociate themselves from those, shall we say, plebian Pixies fans; yes, I'm being an asshole, but I can't help but love the brittle production, each shrill snare hit threatening eruption, the hesitant piano on "Lion/Lamb" feeling strangely limited and enclosed, vulnerable and muted. Secret Name continues Low's trajectory of ultra-minimalist arrangements, this time pinching a few "experimental" instrumental choices here and there: a bleak synth, organs, a piano, a few strings. Aesthetically it seems to develop further away from The Curtain Hits The Cast as well as Long Division and closer to what Things We Lost In The Fire would become, particularly in tracks like "Soon", "Immune" or "Will The Night".

Long Review Time. Let's Go To Church

Here's the secret to Secret Name. It's, at times, the most Mormon album Low has done and, in that way, is remarkably brave. Secret Name alone is a nod to the Endowment Ceremony of the LDS. I won't break that down here because I believe in the sanctity of ritual even if I don't believe in that spec denomination. Mind you, as Mormons, Low's got it hard.
