Perhaps Aesthethica is too academic, too ponderous, but there’s something affecting and purposeful at work here that’s more than just unique.
I watched some videos of these guys and can definitely understand why they're kinda hated by a lot of people, but that didn't stop me from really enjoying this project. It's pretty inventive to my ears and is one of the more unique rock albums I've listened to this decade. The playing is impressive, the atmosphere is engaging and there's tons of catchy melodies and powerful moments. Check it out if you missed this one like I did!
I can absolutely see why black metal fans would fucking hate this, because its roots are closer to liturgical and classical music than they are to the black metal scene. Hunter Hunt-Hendrix and her philosophy very much inform the trajectory of the sound: using the burst beats and hypnotic repetition to reach a higher plane of existence and transform the black metal scene to one more accepting of a brighter future, inclusive performance, and deific understanding. I needed to listen to some good ass Black Metal these days.
I don't really see why the Black metal circle isn't into this album. It has everything there is to love about the genre. Great chord progressions, dynamic blast beats and shriekish vocals. The sound isn't overproduced, yet it doesn't sound shitty at all. All the instrumentrs are very much audible and sound really good.
I actually don't see much wrong with this. Very solid release.
