For many, this should be seen as a return to form for a group that has been steadily the most quirky act in music for the better part of the last three decades. Their obvious peak years were between 1999-2009, where the group fully embraced the weirdness they had exhibited on Transmissions From the Satellite Heart and found the best possible translation of that weirdness. The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles, At War With the Mystics and Embryonic are some of the best work the group ever released ... read more

After a one-year hiatus, The Flaming Lips are back as beautifully, boldly and proudly as possible.

The Flaming Lips have quite the extensive discography ranging from the mid 80's, and they are still consistently releasing new albums. Most of the time their songs would switch between being odd, poppy and psychedelic and then slow and syrupy. American Head is definitely in the style of the latter, but I, and a majority of fans prefer the morw eccentric side to the group. It might sound like I had a bias going into this, but they still have great slower balladry tracks, I mean look at a fair ... read more

It’s been a long while since I last wrote anything, I’ve been busy with school and other more, depressing matters which I might get into in another review, but for now I wanted to start this day of reviews with probably the most niche of the three I’m going to be reviewing. The Flaming Lips up to this point have been very hit or miss for everyone. They had some amazing records in the mid 2000s, and then in 2014 they came out with two of their best EPs in Strobo Trip and 7 ... read more

Cool textures and sounds, but a lack of any form of innovation especially in the songwriting...

Felt a little corny, especially when it came to the "we do drugs" songs, they felt very forced.

My god, this is better than i expected watching the album cover. Even if I wasn't a fan of Flaming Lips now i'll break no simp september for them and Kacey Musgraves

FAVORITE TRACK: Watching The Lightbugs Glow

Alright, I know I'm gonna look like I'm simping for Fantano but whatever. I've never gotten into the Flaming Lips so I wasn't motivated to check this thing out very quickly. But I vibe with this record so hard. I absolutely love the sad, lonely neo-psych sound and I get enjoyment out of pretty much every single track. There's so many emotionally moving moments here and I love how atmospheric it all is in general. This is a great album that is consistent, catchy, and memorable.

A decent but unspectacular album from the legendary psych rock band.

Legendary psych pop and rock band The Flaming Lips are back for a new record “American Head”. The 2010s wasn’t the greatest decade for the group but even now they still feel like a group taking seriously. Especially since some of the teaser tracks to this record were really great. The track “My Religion Is You” does have some pretty corny lyrics however the synth bass and the chord progression on this track is too good to deny. My favorite single and song on this ... read more

“American Head” is a quirky new record from critically-acclaimed, psych-rock outfit, The Flaming Lips. While these tracks are imperfect evidently, there are plenty of joyous moments where the non-subtle poeticism and charming instrumentals can be quite rewarding.

Weirdly, the balladry on this LP reminds me of Queen. It’s elegant, cathartic, and heavily dramatised to a point where you can’t help but hang off each word. The difference with The Flaming Lips, however, is ... read more

One of the biggest surprises of the year for sure. That final track and Assassins of Youth are drop dead gorgeous. This has got to be the most overlooked pieces of music this year.

The Flaming Lips usam todos os artifícios possíveis para transformar American Head em um álbum interessante, mas em nenhum momento conseguem soar outra coisa que não sejam entediantes.

This my first full experience with a Flaming Lips album, after getting into them through their producer Dave Fridman's work with MGMT. Holy shit what a brilliantly dark little album this was. Seemingly a meditation on drugs and mortality, American Head whisked me away with it's sound and on top of that has some amazing writing and concepts to boot. It's mix of a melencholic folky breeze with beautiful layering and psychedelic textures made for a listen that is great for both passive and ... read more

This album marks my first experience with The Flaming Lips, and I walked away impressed. Their progressive, 80s-infused style of psychedelic rock includes breathtaking musical movements, amongst a number of gorgeous ballads.

It’s easy to get swept away with their sound, especially in the more production-heavy, atmospheric tracks such as “Brother Eye,” “Assassins of Youth,” and “God and the Policeman.” Their ballads do tend to get lost in a similar ... read more

Feels like classic Flaming Lips in the best way imaginable. The whole tone and aura of the album is something only they could conjure, and the general flow track to track is pretty unbelievable. Not every track hits the mark for me but there's a lot to respect here.

Best tracks: Assassins of Youth, You N' Me Selling Weed, Will You Return / When You Come Down
Worst track: Dinosaurs on the Mountain

Ugh.

Look, I got a serious problem with The Flaming Lips. I actually do like albums like Yoshimi and The Soft Bulletin quite a bit, but once I found out about how Wayne and the band didn’t really do psychedelics like that and just wanted to make their music come across like they do, their entire image was sullied for me. With songs with titles like “Mother I’ve taken LSD” and “You n Me Selling Weed”, this album is the absolute worst example of posing in ... read more

I didn't even know this was coming out, just today I've suddenly come across the existence of 'American Head' and decided to check it out. I'd say it's decent. The whole thing is very trippy, colorful, and kaleidoscopic, it counts with many good tracks and some boring ones. "You n Me Sellin' Weed" is the only bad song here, it's too dragged and ineffectual, although some others are also forgettable but not exactly poor. Some others are full of heart and psychedelic in a good way: ... read more
