Clash

This body of work is as meticulous as it is melancholy, which is what makes it so profoundly personal and universal at the same time.

AllMusic

Freeze, Melt is a daring move for the band; they aren't exactly turning their backs on the huge, happy sound that earned them their glittering place in the dance-rock firmament, but they do bring their sound down to earth in admirable, emotionally affecting fashion.

The Sydney Morning Herald

Although at times they verge on a paint-by-numbers approach, Cut Copy have again made a record befitting the times: inward-looking headphones music from a live band in isolation.

70
PopMatters

On Freeze, Melt, Cut Copy trade in accessibility for expansion and make their pop a touch more cerebral by imbuing it with elements of IDM and ambient music.

Pitchfork

The Australian electro-pop veterans return with a climate-change album both as chilled as an upscale boutique and as politically engaged as your Instagram feed.

Beats Per Minute

The entirety of Freeze, Melt is meditative in the most inoffensive sense; there is no gravitational force – no push and pull to the songs for them to have any more impact than a gentle breeze has on a vast, surging ocean.

Mojo

A meditative, inward-looking affair, Freeze, Melt is best heard after a big night in.

Cut Copy’s new album Freeze, Melt is an enjoyable trip through the shiny textures, mid-tempo beats and introspective vocals of modern electronic pop.

God Is in the TV

None of which is to say Freeze, Melt is a bad record: by anyone else’s standards it’s a wonderful one. But when you’ve set the bar as high as Cut Copy continually have over the last 15 years, anything short of brilliance can only be a disappointment.

Slant Magazine

An album that appears caught between modes, playfully riding cascading synths even as it lyrically subsumes itself in dourness.

50
Spectrum Culture

Whitford’s bland enviro-conscious writing and deflated performances aren’t worth the slog.

I was actually excited for this release, mainly because of the teaser single, "Like Breaking Glass", which is an excellent track that sounds incredibly similar to the great material on In Ghost Colours. So I was hoping that the entire record would take this approach and sound like the well-crafted, synthy material of Cut Copy's early days. However, I was disappointed to find that everything apart from that track is rather more resemblant of their last few mediocre albums, which was a ... read more

Freeze, Melt is my first experience with Cut Copy since their first two LPs, which I heard as a child in 2010. Cut Copy has this soft, ambient sound that is either love it or hate it.

Freeze, Melt is even softer than their previous work in my opinion. It sounds more like music for after the party. It doesn't sound danceable at all. Although there's some good instrumentation, most of it is just soft and basic.

What makes this record better is exactly that. It's turning out to be a little ... read more

When you have two large copies of electronic production in hand, such as In Ghost Colors (2008) and Zonoscope (2011), in addition to, of course, some of the most dance compositions of the last two decades, such as Hearts on Fire, Need You Now and Light & Music, it is more than natural to expect a continuation of this same aesthetic direction. However, it was precisely this attempt by Cut Copy to repeat himself creatively within the studio that guaranteed the audience some of the less ... read more
