While she’s been exploring witchy and horrorcore aesthetics combined with trap and industrial metal, it wasn’t until Backxwash’s 2020 album “God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It” that I feel Backxwash turned it from an experiment/gimmick into a fully realized sound, being my second favorite album of the year and garnering her a huge amount of attention with a lot of anticipation for how she follows it up. That followup, which happens to be the second ... read more

I went into this REALLY wanting to love it, and while I do still really like it and there are a lot of highlights, I can’t help but be underwhelmed due to how much potential Backxwash has.

I liked Backxwash’s last record, but I thought it didn’t always feel fully realized. I was hoping this new album would improve upon the shortcomings of her previous album, and while I do think it’s better, I still see room for improvement. One thing that doesn’t need ... read more

Full truth, I might have been riding the Backxwash hype train so much the smog from the engine has clogged up my brain. Do not trust a single word I say for I have been possessed by a trickster spirit. That being said...she's still super fantastic.

While not my favorite from her (that's to be expected with a style change like this) this album still helps to build out Ashanti's music exploring new dimensions. Like if God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It was Ok Computer this would ... read more

i lie here.. is just entertaining as it is terrifying.
the atmosphere backxwash manages to create is dark as hell yet extremely beautiful. i really love the way she blends industrial metal and hip hop into something that sounds nothing like anything i’ve heard before. the production on this is fucking wild and it truly impresses me that (apart from a little help from clppng), she produced this on her own!

faves: wail of the banshee, terror packets, blood in the ... read more

Going into this record, I'd actually never heard a Backxwash record (I missed the one she dropped last year), so I was quite intrigued to see what she'd do on her fourth album. "I Lie Here Buried With My Rings and My Dresses" sonically goes up many of my preferred alleys, me being a fan of industrial hip hop/horrorcore artists like clipping.), yet the ideas came out as a little inconsistent overall. Whilst many of the tracks on here successfully create a hellish, yet addictively grim ... read more

The sound of much needed anarchy.

This was one of my most anticipated releases of 2021. After Backxwash released God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It last year I became a huge fan. I dove into her back catalogue I realised that album was her first time she fully developing this sound of witchy hardcore trap metal so I was interested where she would take this sound next. And that brings us to her 2021 release, I Lie Here Buried With My Rings and My Dresses.

This album dives ... read more

Rapper, producer and (self-proclaimed) cryptid Backxwash returns with a project that is as fully realised as her last, but is truly hers

Still a relatively new name, Backxwash debuted in 2018 with the EP F.R.E.A.K.S, but has been very prolific having since released 2 more EPs, Black Sailor Moon in 2018 and Stigmata in 2020, as well as 2 LPs, Deviancy in 2019 and God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It in 2020.

It's that lattermost project that really skyrocketed her popularity. ... read more

It's evident very quickly into 'I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses' that Backxwash wants the listener to know this is a very important and personal record - and it's portrayed in such a raw and vicious way, with some brutally honest lyricism and themes (that directly affect her). These things are helped with an in-your-face, killer industrial metal & hip-hop sound as well as her aggressive vocal delivery.

There was a part of me that was genuinely unsure how much recognition and staying power that Backxwash’s 2020 project would have for me.

And while part of that could likely be tied to the shorter runtime, I know for a fact that is a ‘me’ thing - often times that are extremely dark and bleak albums that’ll wind up on my year-end lists that I don’t often go back to as much because, well, they head into extremes that aren’t always the most ‘fun’ to ... read more

The material that rapper Backxwash releases never feels deliberately seeking praise, instead focused on intense self-expression and subverting the institutions that would prevent such forms of expression. This by no means is to say that her work is not of strong quality, but rather that the darkness that surrounds Mutinta is never shied from and instead is wrapped around every grinding industrial tone and abrasive bar, likely diverting those of weak heart from engaging. Don't worry, I don't ... read more

Good album.

I'm not going to lie, I was a little scared to listen to this album, however, oh wow! I like it. :) Bacxwash, I love how she combines Hip Hop with Industrial Metal on every album, with a vocal performance that I really like. I begin to understand his world.

Favorite tracks: Purpose Of Pain, Wail Of Banshee, I Lie Here Buried With My Rings And My Dresses, In The Holy Name, Blood In The Water, Song Of Sinners, 666 In Luxaxa, Burn To Ashes.

Least favorite track: Nine Hells.

Wow, what a project. The production, delivery and features on this are phenomenal. It's such a bold and unforgiving album, with elements of horrorcore, industrial and even tribal sounding music on a couple of tracks here like SONGS OF SINNERS and 666 IN LUXANA too. As she mentions, this album as opposed to her last is about her being consumed by her malevolent desires, which I find makes for even more of a harsh and intense sound. At a tight length of just over 30 minutes, it doesn't overstay ... read more

FAVORITE TRACK: WAIL OF THE BANSHEE

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: BLOOD IN THE WATER

Fear is an emotion I feel is very hard for music to pull out of someone. It's hard to leave an album feeling absolutely shaken to the core from fear factor alone the way a scary movie might leave you. I Lie Here Buried With My Rings and My Dresses is anarchist terror. Backxwash is the pioneer of horrorcore hip-hop.

The intro alone sets up how horrifying this album is. Purpose of Pain feels like the ride up the side ... read more

Where was you at when I had to trap
Just to pay for my hormones?
Selling white kids mid, claim it’s from a grid
But the shit really homegrown
Dad can you help me afford transition?
Disowned through a cell phone
The look in his face, soul displaced
He don’t know me no more

Much like the scary movies you see in theaters, horrorcore tends to incorporate violence in weirdly entertaining and over-the-top ways. Something ... read more

On “Redemption”, the closing song from Backxwash’s Polaris Prize-winning previous album, God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out of It, Ashanti Mutinta, in reckoning with her own conception of personal forgiveness, weighed up “the pain that I’ve done compared to the pain I’ve undone” in her life. In a direct echo, her new album, I Lie Here Buried With My Rings and My Dresses, opens with a looped sample of a man dispassionately espousing the ... read more

Horrorcore easily grew on me after projects like clipping. and Backxwash. What makes the latter unique is their loud, enraged flow and direct, resentful lyricism -- but in I LIE HERE BURIED, the trans rapper embraced the anger and prejudice unrightfully bestowed to her to let herself free off the chains.

The intro track, Purpose of Pain, feels like a call back to her previous work, God Has Nothing To Do With This, one that was lyrically more vulnerable, repressed and depressed -- generally, ... read more

Canadian artist Backxwash came out in a big way by winning the Polaris Music Prize with her 2020 debut God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It and continues her mighty take on horrorcore and trap metal with her sophomore effort I Lie Here Buried With My Rings and My Dresses. Listening through tracks like “Wail Of The Banshee”, “Terror Packets" and the title track, it’s hard to imagine anyone else doing that hybrid any better. Similarly “Songs of ... read more

I loved Backxwash's debut record. It was visceral, angry industrial hip hop that was only hampered by a bit of repetition. With this new album, Backxwash has cemented a spot as one of the most abrasive voices in hip hop l, period. Everything is dialed up. It's noisier, angrier, the raps hit even harder, the lyrics deal in hopelessness in life while giving no answers and that's somehow so deeply honest. There are also the layered screams, sometimes sounding like the souls of the damned trying to ... read more

Hip hop is in good hands. Whatever happens to all these rappers, I know BACKXWASH will be there as the last one standing. We won't even notice everyone else is gone. That's how much power that she possesses. Not only in her voice but with her artistry and individuality.

Disowned through a cell phone”

This is my first time checking out Backxwash. After hearing good things about this artist I decided to check out ‘I LIE HERE BURIED WITH MY RINGS AND MY DRESSES’ and i have to say… I am incredibly and thoroughly impressed.

Not only is the production on this album consistently hard hitting and harrowing, backxwash as an mc is very talented and taunting in her presence. She speaks about her ... read more
