I don't listen to much black metal, but as an ex Portuguese resident, I cannot say I wasn't biased when hearing about the Portuguese Black Metal prodigies Gaerea.

Gaerea have done some great things with their second record. From start to finish this thing is filled with some great atmospheric elements, and some incredible musicianship. The drums in particular stood out for me on this record and they just catch the ear and won't let go. From crushing, fast paced blast beats to slower beats like in the intro of the song "To Ain," the drums consistently sound great. Aight, so Gaerea's first full-length was really freakin' cool. The production value was uncompromisingly high, the soundscape was viscerally emotional, the tension was high, and the songwriting was extremely strong. Gaerea created a unique sound.
All of that is definitely still here without question. But the question I keep asking myself is, how does this build upon what they started in Unsettling Whispers? And honestly, while this album is very good and I enjoyed it very much, ... read more
