this is not age of ads II, it’s carrie and lowell plus aporia and ‘enjoy your rabbit’/zodiac era sufjan

it’s wonderful. definitely my favorite single of the year (2020). surprisingly, it won’t be on the ascension album.

A proggier and more spiritual (a label I'm normally leery of, but it's unavoidable with this release) take on The Age of Adz era Sufjan. It's fucking transcendent. Recommended to everyone.
Another fantastic track in which Sufjan compares himself to a much darker figure in history (John Wayne Gacy Jr and Tonya Harding previously). This time referencing the guru Rajneesh, who may have been responsible for some acts of bio-terrorism in the US in the 80s.

I don’t really get why people are acting like this is so much better than America. Sure, it’s a bit more immediately gratifying, and that chorus becomes a transcendent climax around the four minute mark, but I’m pretty much done with the song by minute seven. Unlike America, this one’s ambient outro feels really tacked on and flavorless, adding nothing to the track. I’d love it way more if it just faded out a little after Sufjan’s last lines.
