CRITIC REVIEWS

Entertainment Weekly
Eschewing high-profile hitmakers like the Matrix and the Neptunes, Beyoncé collaborates with under-the-radar minds like Rich Harrison and Dr. Dre’s secret weapon, Scott Storch, exploring, albeit hesitantly, new directions in contemporary black music.

AllMusic

The first half is good enough to make Dangerously in Love one of the best mainstream urban R&B records released in 2003, and makes a strong case that Knowles might be better off fulfilling this destiny instead of reuniting with Destiny.

Evening Standard

When it is up tempo, Dangerously In Love works deliciously ... The problem lies in the overwhelming quantity and underwhelming quality of the ballads.

70
Slant Magazine
Unfortunately, the album is bottom-heavy with mid-tempo numbers and R&B balladry.
60
Rolling Stone
Just twenty-one, Beyoncé has plenty of time to develop a mature ballad style that makes sense for her. For now, she’s more compelling when she’s not trying so earnestly to act like a grownup.
60
Mojo

It's not so much that the most singularly talented and important soul singer of now has let us down, more she's tried too hard to please.

60
Q Magazine
She has good songs, but no great songs.
50
NME
Not, by any means, a disaster. More a cruel glimpse of a talent that occasionally blazes but is frustratingly inconsistent.
40
The Guardian
Perhaps inevitably, the desperate urge to cover every musical base from dancefloor to soul-ballad means that there is barely a track here with any distinctive identity or even a tune.
40
Uncut
Things degenerate into a dreary stream of self-pitying/self-mythologising ballads.

NOW Magazine

Most of Dangerously In Love is impossibly smooth and dreary, with Knowles earning the distinction of being the one vocalist who can suck the life out of a Sean Paul guest spot. That might not be a surprise for Destiny's Child fans, but for those of us who got a peek beyond that, we know the girl can do better.

I've tried so many times but I can't like this album even tho a LOVE Beyoncé. I feel like this is so flat and boring, lacks of personality and is forgettable. The record has 3 or 4 good songs but those can't save this whole thing.
