This feels like a classic, old style folk album and that vibe is a unique and welcome one from the group. The focus is on Darnielle's voice and the guitar strumming, and the quality often reverberates and has the tonal quality of an old-style album. This is clearly intentional and an artistic choice, and it stands out well. Perhaps not the perfect example of the groups sound, it certainly will be a stand-out among the discography.

One of their many classics for fans, just superb songwriting on this. Darnielle's sardonic wit and virtuosity for songwriting were instantly solidified, which had really started to come together on their last lp.
