It's the type of record that demands solitary reverence. No, this isn't music. It can't be. It's something else.

Oldham definitely hasn't abandoned his foundation of mordant lyrics and minimalist arrangements, but he has built a variety of different layers that make this album an emotional and pleasurable listening experience.

As a whole, I See a Darkness is sparse and imprecise, placing a few piano lines, an electric guitar riff, and some unobtrusive drumbeats slightly amiss each other, giving the whole album a disjointed feel (especially when Oldham overdubs his own nervous voice in this same manner).

Quite what commercial impact this delicate, intelligent record will have upon civilisation is open to conjecture, but if nothing else 'I See A Darkness' is perfect music for the bewitching hour.

Imagine sitting in a forest contemplating taking your life. This is not the album to listen to while contemplating that. It's haunting, diminishing, and self loathing. There is no beauty to be had within the songs on this record, just much appreciation that they exist and were able to be conjured up.

Never before has depression and loneliness been so masterfully expressed in music. Outside of the points where the record gets shrouded under its own dark clouds, its truly a masterwork in passionate americana.

BEST TRACKS: Song for a New Breed, I See a Darkness, Death to Everyone, A Minor Place, Today I Was an Evil One, Nomadic Revery (All Around)

I probably have more songs by Will Oldham stored in my mind palace than those of any other artist.

I think 'I See a Darkness' will bagsy the penthouse.

there is a certain memory I have attached to this record, a moment of pure happiness where I was in love and in awe of that feeling. I believe listening to this will always take me back to that moment, and that is one of the most beautiful feelings in the world

Although a well pieced together project, this album didn't do a ton to stand out to me. It may garner an additional listen down the road, as this has the vibe of something that I would enjoy, but it just wasn't there for me on this occasion.
