CRITIC REVIEWS

Metal Injection
Those willing to dig into the sprawling anti-musical excavations will uncover many progressive sludge metal gems.
78
Pitchfork
Returning with mightier riffs and wilder improvisations than ever, the trio offers a spiritual vision of metal, one well timed to a moment of crisis.
76
Beats Per Minute

Direct when it needs to be, ethereal and gorgeously distant at other times, May You Be Held is not for the casual listener seeking instant gratification.

Exclaim!

SUMAC have been a band about love since their inception, and May You Be Held is its most unreserved expression of this ideal yet.

AllMusic
As with any of the band's releases, this one requires extreme patience, as it can go from lengthy passages of near-stillness to unrelenting torrents of sound.

We're now at LP4 of continuing to push the boundaries between metal and noise. While I'm always impressed by Sumac's boldness, at this point it's just getting harder for me to stay interested.
