While texturally and conceptually a solid follow-up to the breathtaking debut, "Shrines", "Another Eternity" falls devestatingly short. The sound is of a production with less depth, less experimentalism, and vastly more mainstream. As Synthpop and Inditronica become so copious that the genre is basically the new generation's adult-contemporary, its harder for once-prolific bands such as Phantogram, Little Dragon and Purity Ring to stay relevant. In trying for hits, Megan ... read more

The first great album of the year. They did it again. Another Eternity is as rich as Shrines. Although it has a more mature approach.

The lyrics, the sound... Another wonderful work by the canadian kids.

A better, cleaner through-listen than shrines.

Purity Ring's second full-length album takes a much poppier and cheerful turn than the dark, moody "Shrines", but is every bit as much trap-influenced, infectious, and impactful as their debut.

Really disappointed with this effort after their impressive debut. They've clearly gone for a more radio-friendly sound and, in so doing, have lost much of their originality. Shame.

A timeless masterpiece! way better than Shrines for me, every song is almost a highlight on here. every hook, every verse and every beat gets stuck in your head. Though Shrines might be more unique but it has nowhere near the same replay value or is as catchy as this one. also it's way more diverse in term of sound and writing: from the R&B jam "repetition", the in-your-face trap like banger "stranger than earth" to the outstanding beautiful and dreamy closing track ... read more

Man, when 'Shrines' came out it blew my mind. This just blows. Well, not exactly, but it's definitely a disappointment (one of the biggest of 2015). Sure, the production's gorgeous: but where 'Shrines' was dark and icky (and all the better for it), this is bright and bubbly (like the soundtrack to a unicorn galloping over a rainbow). They sound more like CHVRCHES here, who are a band whose appeal I just don't get.

Standout tracks: bodyache. push and pull, begin again

This album is much cleaner than Shrines, and an interesting jump in style. Still manages to be interesting despite feeling more pop. Multiple listens solidifies this album as nothing short of spectacular.

☆☆ ~ Regular album with an uninteresting, weak composition. I wasn't feel fully connected listening to it.

God, I wanted to like this, but every time I go back and listen I am shocked by how bored I am. Purity Ring's first album was the kind of project that brought people with different tastes together because of its incredible electronic noises and Megan James' child-like, but never annoying vocals. The song titles felt gimmicky to me, but the songs were so cavernous and spacious that I didn't care. It was a type of synthpop that felt original and slightly sinister. 'Belispeak' has some weird-ass ... read more

Sure looking back the production may be a bit too squeaky clean and many of the tunes similar but its a highly enjoyable short record with a lot of replay value.

Masterpiece right there

An excellent understated display of experimental synthpop that remains effervescent and somber in it's effect. It doesn't attempt to break walls down and create a showstopping experience, and the effect is a created atmosphere of tranquility.
Best Track: Repetition
Worst Track: Heartsigh

Best Tracks: Push Pull, Repetition, Stranger Than Earth
Worst Tracks: Dust Hymn, Begin Again, Flood on the Floor
Best Moment: The final chorus of Repetition

"Another Eternity" was never going to be as much of a revelation as "Shrines" unless they took their sound in a completely different direction, in no small part because seemingly every pop radio fixture took a stab at that sound. (Dark Horse, anyone?) But rather than experimenting, or doubling down on their aesthetic to one-up the latecomers, they sand off their own edges, amping up their pop sensibilities but opting for less interesting production. That said, Purity Ring ... read more

What happened to the production on this thing? Purity Ring went from making some of the most interesting pop music out there to making generic synthpop with absolutely no personality. And Megan James' voice is just way too boring and linear for an album like this.

Best Tracks: heartsigh, begin again, flood on the floor
Worst Tracks: stillness in woe

It's not bad, per ce. It just feels stagnant. Another Eternity follows in the steps of Shrines almost exactly, feeling unnecessary and at times boring.

purity ring showed a very promising direction on their debut album shrines. but with their second full length release, nothing is done better, just bigger. the production is blown up compared to the trippy, minimal style that was present on shrines. basically every track here is an attempt at a radio hit, which is why it sounds pretty generic and almost boring. i also really didnt find any major differences here in the lyrics, song structures, or production. all were very formulaic. there ... read more

First of all, "Begin Again" is a massive song and one of my favorite of the year so far, and i still find Megan's voice absolutely mesmerizing. Personally I don't think that this is the sophomore slump that many reviews seems to suggest.
With that said, i think the album lacks any real focus, and is filled with way to many generic and empty beats, that don't really serve a purpose. Where "Shrines" felt fresh and inventive, this feels sort of forced and without any real ... read more

Although more varied tonally than their last album, another eternity doesn’t have anything to add to the Purity Ring aesthetic. Instead, we get “bodyache,” a track full of repetitive lyrics and beats that wouldn’t be amiss—undistorted—on a Taylor Swift track, while “repetition” hangs a lamp on the album’s static dullness, with its vocal samples and flat percussion building to nothing, but at great effort. Structural centerpieces “dust ... read more
