On his first solo album, 2015's Policy, Butler worked almost single-handed on every track, but here he's backed by his own live band. That brings a cohesive energy to tracks like the light industrial "I Don't Know What I Don't Know", the splendid boogie-woogie anthem "Surrender" and the swinging Springsteenisms of "Not Gonna Die".
Generations is a breathing (often panting) work of art, with Butler dialing in the drama, excitement, and flow of each song with controlled precision.
Melodic snap and guileless sentiments from the Arcade Fire dynamo ... Shares AF's propensity to over-egg though.
