Not only does it show the musical ability of the band, which can be heard in their first two LPs, it also proves its point as an album full of exploration for not only them but the listener too.

Under The Radar

Candid feels cozily at home with Whitney’s own material and given the undercard picks they chose to cover most listeners will be none the wiser.

Although covers albums are usually signs of trouble, Whitney's Candid is a surprisingly inspired release, with a song selection that's eclectic and often obscure.

Candid's mellow transcriptions and restrained approach may or may not draw praise from admirers of the source material, but they're a must for fans of the group's distinctly reflective demeanor and bubble-wrapped ambiance, which, guided by Ehrlich's soothing presence, succeed in making each version their own.
Louder Than War
With their new covers album, Whitney mostly play it safe, but they still end up delivering a fantastic summer soundtrack.
Though no song on the Chicago rock band’s all-covers album is particularly wild or ambitious, the collection is faithful, fine-tuned, and thoughtfully curated.
Spectrum Culture

Candid finds Whitney throwing more curveballs than one would likely expect on a covers album

It’s a neat 10 song selection, one that finds the band filtering the source material through their lens of Instagram Americana, resulting in a project that is perfectly nice, but rarely more than that.

Happily though, the overall quality of Candid is surprisingly high – for a covers record.
after releasing an album in 2019, and, in 2020, undergoing an extensive tour, robbery, and covid, Whitney are back with their third album.

Whitney’s mission, essentially, is to implore the creative expression. The tracksare all covers which is BOLD; i had to look them up before realizing what they were: an obscure R&B cover of Kelela, and an even more obscure cover of indie folk songwriter damien jurado’s AM A.M.

‘candid’ is almost Whitney’s best album; its ... read more
Funnily enough, as I was looking up their music I noticed this LP just released and of course I had to give it a listen. As the album's title suggests, this is true Whitney at their youthful, ever growing sight on our world. A good portion of the cuts are covers that feel very Whitney-esque. They have that small town, county flare of people who derive their wishes from the nature and the friends near them. It's good they gave us more music to hold us over in such a vulnerable time, like they ... read more
I am a pretty big fan of Smith Westerns so when I heard the "No Woman" single I immediately had huge expectations for this band. After putting out a very solid debut album I've personally not been overly thrilled with their recent output. And while Whitney selected some decent songs for this release, a covers album is not going to be the thing that wins me over. These guys are as "chill" as it gets, but imo they are yet to reach their potential. Its not that this or Forever ... read more
Forever Turned Around was one of my favourite albums last year, a neatly packaged indie folk album with plenty of memorable songs and a underlying sadness that made it infinitely revisitable. To follow up that great album, Whitney have dropped a collection of covers and for the most part they are pretty good. They lack a lot of the lushness present in their sound on FTA but as a little fun in between project this is certainly good! High On a Rocky Ledge, Crying Laughing Loving Lying and Rain ... read more
Those Whitney boys are back with a solid release for their 3rd record.
