CRITIC REVIEWS

PopMatters

It’s an album that gets better with every play, with every peeling back of its more obvious, glossy layers. It especially repays headphone use, where each stutter, bend, warp, and pitchshift can be discovered and new subtleties can become apparent.

Tiny Mix Tapes
In terms of assemblages and repetitions, what we have here is a creation that is equal parts experimentation and familiarity, cheese sincerity, teen affect, cultural diagnostics, and a liberal streak of naïve charm. Or we could call it Weird Science, and leave it at that.

Spin

He and Ford present a concept albumof puffy-shoulder keytar pop (supposedly about the year 2082?) that would give Alan Parsons and Mr. Roboto pause.

AllMusic

Channel Pressure is equally enjoyable as a painstaking period re-creation drenched in neon nostalgia and nylon nausea, and as a piece of sterling (if decidedly warped) electronic pop music in its own right.

DIY
Somehow Ford & Lopatin have created a record that is exactly how a collaboration between them should sound, but at the same time it tricks you into believing it is a digital rendering that has never been touched by human hand.

Pitchfork

As suggested by the electronics obsession of the album cover, the world of Channel Pressure is overstuffed and ridiculous, but also an enticing invitation to plug in and drop out.

75
Coke Machine Glow

More than anything else, Channel Pressure is a triumph of studio craft and evidence that the group has as much potential as producers as they do as composers.

Beats Per Minute

Channel Pressure is an undeniably fun ride through EPCOT-themed dreams and technological mysticism.

No Ripcord
It’s kept short enough and rarely becomes tedious, even through some of the unnecessary instrumentals. It’s not one of the year’s best records, but it’s churned out a couple of its best songs. At the very least, they’ve managed to create an atmosphere that’s intriguing as it is entertaining.

Under The Radar

As enjoyable as Channel Pressure can be, it's difficult to take it in as anything more than a time capsule. If you're coming to Ford & Lopatin as an Oneohtrix Point Never fan (guilty), you might be shocked by how goofy the dark synth lord can get.

FACT Magazine
Even if it’s not quite the sweeping epic of nostalgia-pop some of us might have hoped for, the production is rarely less than astounding.

Great sound design, and the songs are catchy as hell!

Reminiscent pieces of the short vaporwave era. Lopatin goes for another of his nostalgia-filled trips in this LP, siding up with soft-rocker Joel Ford in a roomy, trippy and sometimes funky work. In Channel Pressure, the duo messes with synths, chopped-up 80s slow jam samples and even vocals, which helps pushing the glossy atmosphere even further. There are a handful of catchy tunes here, with the vocal-led ones sounding very fun and uncompromised, but disappointing a little bit in the more out ... read more

Honestly one of my favorite albums of 2011. Still coming back to it, and after all, that's the real test.
