His drive, intensity, and recklessness are polished only to a certain point, resulting in an album that's widely enjoyable but not watered-down.

Top Shotta proves that NLE Choppa has an interesting story to tell; it might just not be the one he thinks people really want to hear.

He had an astronomical breakthrough year in 2019, and on this debut NLE Choppa shows off his range, veering from braggadocio to vulnerability.

The Needle Drop
NLE Choppa's debut album is buoyed his potential and a handful of hard-hitting highlights.
Is anyone else getting tired of basically hearing the same album every time these trap artists drop? I know I probably sound like a boomer but good God. Change it up a bit! Make your style of trap stand out from the hundreds of other trap artists that are on the charts right now. No one wants to hear the same music from different artists over and over again (well, apparently some people do or else these guys would've got the message a long time ago). Choppa is a very young artist and has a lot ... read more
I was not expecting to love this as much as I did. Though I was hyped just based on how good his recent singles were. This is surprisingly consistent though, while it is definitely too long, 20 tracks is too much, even the worst ones are still pretty decent. The beats on here are really nothing special, but Choppa is a VERY entertaining vocalist so I was pretty engaged throughout the whole album. He's surprisingly good at singing, but he truly shines when it comes to his insane inflections and ... read more
NLE really brings a surprisingly decent debut LP. As of recent I haven't really cared for much of NLE's newer work. I did like "Walk Em Down" but I haven't found much interest in any of the other newer stuff since his lackluster EP last year. On this project though, he seems to improve on many of the negative aspects of his older music. His singing that I usually despise as it just sounds like a wannabe NBA Youngboy actually has personality on here and it doesn't sound horrible. He ... read more
This is really no different from any other trap album ever released. I'm guessing nle choppa went onto YouTube and typed "trap style beats" and used one of the results that he found for each track. The only track that was instrumentally unique was Camelot in which felt like a breath of fresh air compared to everything else on this project as the deep sounding piano was very nice. This instrumental is matched with an energetic performance from choppa with nice flows.

XXL 2020 Freshman 9: NLE Choppa

I like NLE Choppa a lot. He has a lot of songs I really like. He's really talented, he's a good rapper, he's very popular. I'd say a little too popular. Why not last year? He's basically fully established at this point, he would've fit way better last year than this year. Sure he fits the requirements, but he fit them better last year.

Anyway, this album. Not disappointed, it's about as good as I expected, but it could've been a lot better. It's similar to my ... read more
