It should be stressed that with the The Plague Within album, the veterans of doom and gloom are resisting decay with style, not falling off the high standards they have set over the years.

I'm part of the minority that thinks Paradise Lost's best work was released in the second half of their career. Albums like this as well as Tragic Idol and Faith Divides Us -- Death Unites Us are the reasons why. The Plague Within was my entry point to the wonderful world of Paradise Lost, so there's probably some nostalgia at play, but I don't care. No Hope in Sight is one of the best album openers in doom metal history, and in general, this is a great modern doom metal release.
Metal Album of the Year
Good back to the roots!
Paradise lost have come nearly full circle on this album, resurrecting Nick Holme's growly doom vocals - the difference here is what all those year's have taught them. Namely to focus their attack and never forsake those all important hooks.

A surprisingly consistent effort, this easily ranks among their top three or four releases.
