I really liked a few tracks on here, especially "The Black Mirror Episode" - a song that really intrigued me for its topic and its eerie vibe which was an anomaly within this record.
Apart from the rare highlights, there isn't really much I can comment on besides saying that it is a boring record and a snoozefest. Open Mike Eagle reminds me heavily of Isaiah Rashad as they both bore me tremendously with their uncharismatic deliveries and Cloud Rap aesthetic. There's a difference ... read more

Open Mike Eagle really gained prominence on his album from 2017, Brick Body Kids Still Daydream, which was my first introduction to the artist. However, he's been floating around for over a decade now as a member of hip hop collectives and more prominently as a comedian and podcaster. His time on Comedy Central may have been a big moment for him to grab the spotlight and show what he could do, and by the time his 2017 album came out it was finally time for him to shine as a musician. That album ... read more

Over his extensive hip-hop career, Open Mike Eagle hasn't really proved why he should be regarded as highly as others in a similar vein of conscious (and self-conscious) hip-hop. Busdriver's manic delivery and off-kilter song progressions, milo's convoluted philosophical musings, and Elucid's performances with billy woods as Armand Hammer all serve as figureheads of this alternative style, while Mike plays second fiddle with comatose, almost expressionless rapping and meek beat selection. With ... read more

The subtle genius of Open Mike Eagles minimalism impresses me yet again, a uniquely weird and introspective release.

I can see this going down but I'm giving this an 87 for now, hopefully it stays that way.

This album leaves me Impressed and intrigued, but not as in love with it as I had hoped.

I do really like this album and it’s personality, but it can be a little boring at times. The production is interesting but not fantastic, and while I appreciate the way he shifts from funny to sad, I think this album just feels a little empty. I do really appreciate the vulnerability of this album, his solid performances, and the introspection, which all help make this album one that I like, even if ... read more

Everybody knows the solution to a crappy day, week or month is some good music and anime! And Open Mike Eagle has had a real shitty year.

Anime, Trauma and Divorce is OME's detailing of the past year in his life, most notably how the divorce from his wife and mother of his son has affected him. His usual wittiness can be found here in spades, cleverly referencing several anime and comics among other things both in humour and in relation to his struggles.

For instance opening song Death Parade ... read more

I have never heard of this dude but his voice is really soothing. I appreciate the effort here but this is pretty boring. He has some nice lyricism, cool topics, or decent storytelling. The minimalism of the production just doesn't cut it for me. I don't know what this is trying to be but it does remind me of some early 2010s soul.

Smooth hip hop is my jam I think. Open Mike Eagle is relentless, 12 tracks were enough to had me stuck on this adventure inside his mind. There's a depressing feeling throughout the album but a sense of comfort as well. Music heals and music feels like a portal to stress relief, everything feels true, when truth is told without projection. 'Anime, Trauma and Divorce' finds its right place in the middle of all the pain, a very deep breath.

"It's October, and I'm tired."

Anime, Trauma & Divorce is Los Angeles emcee Open Mike Eagle’s most personal to date. The album details what Open Mike Eagle referred to as the worst year of his life. The album tackles a range of Mike’s struggles in life such as divorcing his wife, and the discomfort and trauma he experienced while trying to deal with these upheavals in his life.

Anime, Trauma & Divorce is not on par with Open Mike Eagle's best albums Dark Comedy ... read more

Mike provides some of his silliest lyrics while still tapping into some emotional moments.

If you're looking for an RTJ or Denzel Curry level of grandiosity, you'll be greatly disappointed. Mike here is more introspective, vulnerable, and reflective than ever. It's actually nice hearing men rapping in this emotional state and perspective that we don't often hear. His spoken-word rapping sounds like pages torn out of a journal and put to music. And it sounds like he made this album for himself and his personal journey. He's just trying to heal, y'all.

I really like this album. My only complaints are;
the hook and last verse on headass
the hook on Asa's Bop
the whole Fifteen Twenty Feet Ocean Nah track

EDIT: wait fuck asa's bop and headass grew on me lol.

Sweet, unassuming, quietly cathartic and telling the truths he can tell, Open Mike Eagle's 2020 project, the first in three years, is easy listening. Often that may be a detriment rather than a compliment but here, it's one of the rare times you really enjoy a record for what blanks and edges it shows, not for the complexities it hides.

Still, there's only so much "easy" can do before it bores away the time. But even with that, "Anime, Trauma and Divorce" is full of ... read more

Eagle is an amazing lyricist, and shows off his skills against a background of subtle and minimalist instrumentals and flows. It was expected that Anime, Trauma and Divorce wouldn't be a loud or flashy record, but the lo-fi and at times lonely production style forms the perfect canvas for Eagle to finds quiet triumphs. The result is an intriguing personality that shines through on an album that feels more like an inner monologue than anything else. The endearing, almost banal humour and ... read more
