Maybe it's the uncanny resemblance between Andy Shauf's voice and that of the legendary (and close to my heart) Elliott Smith*, but something about this understated album draws me in, even if there only really two songs that are particularly memorable. It's not the most cheerful album released this year, that's for sure, but there's warmth in the arrangements (especially with the warm timbre of the clarinet) and depth to Shauf's lyrics.
