Entertainment Weekly
Atlanta’s finest devil-horn devotees synthesize seemingly dozens of subtly different metal subgenres into a singular pursuit. Those hybrids mutate awesomely, creating one burly, beastly adrenaline spike.

Drowned in Sound

The Hunter is a pitch for the mainstream - but it doesn’t compromise on Mastodon’s core ambition.

No Ripcord

The Hunter is a collection of songs that inadvertently expands their repertoire and capabilities while they turn off their heads and let their fingers tell the story.

They’ve never made the same album twice, and luckily, that streak continues with The Hunter.

Consequence of Sound

Freed from the confines of elements and concept albums, Mastodon sounds fresher than ever.

Where The Hunter lacks conceptual cohesion, it's varied and accessible enough to catapult Mastodon right to the front of the modern heavy metal pack.

This was never their strongest effort but regardless, was always a really, really good album. There are few harsh moments or abrasive strong points on this one but its balance of sludge, stoner rock and alternative metal strongly maintains their capabilities and keeps them in regards as one of the greatest metal bands of the last 25 years. The Hunter strips away most of what made Mastodon so appealing in the first place. They made a much simpler album, which has cleaner vocals, the riffs are more minimalist, it's not all that progressive and it is very cleanly produced. A lot of it sounds more like some of the bigger 90s hard rock bands, almost Alice in Chains and Soundgarden like, but not in a good way. This one is not one I would come back to, and it is easily a misstep for Mastodon.

This album is starting to grow on me more, but it's definitely their weakest release. It's more accessible for sure, but the songwriting quality has declined in this album. This album was kind of a let down for me and it's just not for me.

Favourite tracks: Black Tongue, The Hunter, Stargasm

The first slip under the radar for me regarding Mastodon. Something was missing from past works.
