Hackman made the brave decision to go for twelve brand new tracks for We Slept At Last, and a cohesive and spellbinding album is the result. It isn’t necessarily an immediate album, but after a few listens it reveals its details and incredible songs a little more.
Like Hackman herself, this first outing is subtle, but somehow it packs in drama and poetry in a way that’s tender yet fascinating. It’s been well worth the wait.
Hackman successfully shifts unhappiness into different territories. She develops under the spotlight, each song adding further fuel to her progression.
Ultimately, We Slept At Last is an impressive debut that showcases an enchanting and fully fleshed-out sonic vision. With a demonstrated degree of control and self-awareness, this is surely not the last we’ll hear from her.
Her full-length debut is filled with mystical, pagan folk incantations and full-band flourishes alike, all routinely bathed in atmosphere, murmured vocals and off-kilter arrangements ... Yet while Hackman is obviously talented this collection is too downbeat and one-note to exhibit any real ear-catching magic.
