It's one of the best titles in modern musical history, for song and for album, and as a call to arms mentally and physically the promise of funk was never so perfectly stated.

Funkadelic has inhaled so much acid for its sophomore album that it would be impossible not to free the mind.
As for the ass, it's a completely personal matter if it will, hopefully, follow.

Free Your Mind... sees Funkadelic mix their funky sound with the Psychedelic Acid rock movement for some great effects especially the opening title track and should be known as one of their better records.

From the minute this started, this was a super trippy experience of an album. The vocal layering, warped instrumental sounds, changes in tone, it's all such an interesting style that was applied here. Not as crazy about this one as the other two of Funkadelic's first three albums, the self-titled and Maggot Brain are much more interesting and engaging than this one, but I wouldn't say it's necessarily mediocre, just very much underwhelming in comparison to the other two. I really love the opener, and I Wanna Know If It's Good to You is up there in the ranks of their best tracks, but tracks 2, 3, 5 and 6 come off as really boring to me. Stylistically very mundane, it isn't as impressive as ... read more

This sits somewhere in the middle of what I’ve heard from Funkadelic so far, a bit better and more interesting in my opinion than Cosmic Slop and Standing on the Verge of Getting It On, but not as good as their self-titled which preceded it and obviously not up there with Maggot Brain. Very trippy, lyrically pretty interesting for a funk album and some of the lyrics almost have quite a punk attitude as well as the weird spiritual stuff. Great guitars, good spacey effects and generally a ... read more
