Consequence of Sound

Apocalypse is one of those rare modern jazz records that’s remarkably unpretentious without having to cheapen the daunting complexity jazz is noted for.

Pitchfork

Bruner wants it all: the future shock of electronics, the tightly edited pleasures of pop, the love-sick opulence of quiet-storm soul, and the show-stopper instrumental breaks of jazz.

musicOMH

It’s the sound of a fiendishly inventive musician and his talented producer trying to squeeze in all the great ideas before armageddon hits.

No Ripcord

A master producer and one of the world’s most gifted bassists can, together, make for a relaxing yet thrilling ride through a laid back funk universe

Beats Per Minute

I haven’t been this impressed with a bassist since my dad first showed me Les Claypool.

Drowned in Sound

There’s a completely unique blend of textures and a desire for musical experimentation running through the bloodstream of The Golden Age of Apocalypse.

"The Golden Age of Apocalypse" is a great showcase for Thundercat's songwriting. His crazy bass lines, jazzy instrumentation and mind-warping progressions are really unique to modern jazz and his vocal performances are smooooth. Maybe the production doesn't always pan out, but this is a really solid debut project overall.

Also, as a fan of "Cosmogramma", hearing the "MmmHmm" reference on "Is It Love?" brought a huge smile on my face!

Decent

Incorporated with jazzy bass lines and groovy chord progressions, Thundercat's debut is definitely different from anything I've ever heard, although not as fulfilling as I'd like it to be.

Great

I love everything about this. The jazzy funk sounds to the light vocals over them. I don't have much else to say. Thundercat is certainly a talented individual though. Props to him for making a great record!
