‘Apolonio’, its title taken from his middle name, is a subtly eclectic ride through timeless funk licks, ultra-modern sensibilities and nods to Apollo’s Mexican heritage. It aches with unrequited feelings but, musically, sets the young star up as the new master of steamy bedroom jams.

‘Apolonio’ surmises Omar’s standing as an artist’s artist. This isn’t homogeneous chart fodder but the work of an artist intent on world-building: Omar imbues ‘Apolonio’ with instrumental breaks, tempo shifts, snares and scratches, wanting to get across the feeling - the immensity of feeling attached to distant vignettes that still mar the memory.
Shut up NME, go to bed.

Look, for this kind of bedroom pop shtick, I tend to discount the problems of inadequate content and lacking lyrics if the instrumentals are catchy and the vocals are attracting, but rarely do I find something redeemable here.

He used to be so ... read more

No you aren’t. Shut up.
Frank Peninsula

I’m convinced Omar Apollo doesn’t have a single original bone in his body. I first discovered Omar Apollo off of some singles he dropped earlier this year, thought they were generic and pretty mediocre, and then was surprised to see him on Joji’s Nectar. In my opinion, he had the second-worst feature on the entire album, only behind Lil Yachty. His verse was super reminiscent of Frank Ocean when rapping so going into this project I didn’t have that high ... read more
