Highlight: And Oceans Between Us

Made me think of:
This kind of catchy, atmospheric blackgaze is right in my sweet spot and so yeah, I'm totally loving this. Harakiri for the Sky have given us an incredibly powerful record that, although it's long, I never find myself getting bored thanks to how many various stages these tracks move through. Most every riff and melody the band crafts is interesting to some degree. What the album may lack in (vocals, originality) it, for me, makes up for it with just how emotionally potent it all is. Well what can I say, it is good post black metal, but I do think its hampered by the track lengths. Sure it makes the songs bleed together, but the indie tones and piano give it some variety. I do think I'd appreciate more uniqueness like how Asthenia's Aisa has a freakin vocoder track, or how Malikliya's debut takes cues from J-pop (at least vocally). So it seems middle of the road for me.
This is a really strong atmospheric black metal album that would've been amazing if it didn't overstay its welcome. While there wasn't a moment I'd call bad, the fact that this thing is almost an hour and a half while not showing much variation in sound cripples it. If it were trimmed down by a good 25-30 minutes, I'd have an album of the year contender.
Harakiri For The Sky return with their longest, yet most compelling album since their early recordings. It’s got plenty of heart and incredibly raw performances, but the grandiose instrumentals and epic nature you crave from a Black Metal / Blackgaze album. It’s length though is intimidating, and if your new to the band I wouldn’t start here.
