Yeah I mean this is great. Natural, clean samples turned into groovy pleasant beats. Bars for days. S TIER features such as Run The Jewels, and an AMAZING posthumous Doom feature

It’s a recipe for a great rap album

After the great singles, I really didn’t have any doubts that this was going to be good. In some ways, it feels like a love letter to Hip-Hop Heads. Combining an incredible yet underrated producer with a respected rapper, that I think most would agree is one of the greatest to ever do it. But they don’t stop at that, they also got legends of the rap game. Run The Jewels, Raekwon, Conway and DOOM all come through with great bars, making this record all that much more noteworthy. This feels like Black Thought's Stream Of Thought series on steroids, with a much higher standard of consistency, quality, and production. I'm all for Black Thought venturing by himself away from The Roots, but this is the first time I've heard one of his solo works approach his Roots works in quality. Me likey, especially if it includes one of the best MF DOOM features I've heard in a while. It's boom bappy, it's vibey, it's catchy, and it never strays from its sonic blueprint for too long. “Cheat Codes” is a great album from Black Thought and Danger Mouse and features insane performances from Black Thought and fantastic production throughout. The features are also really good, and I can see this album having a lot of replay value and growing on me even more. But even if it doesn’t, it’s still one of the best rap albums of the year for sure.

when Cheat Codes flourishes into a modern classic imma be sitting here telling y’all i told u so

Black Thought is, in my opinion, one of the best lyricists of all time. from doing the Time: The Donut of the Heart beat justice in ‘06 to his legendary 10 min freestyle, only a select few emcees have a candle to hold to Black Thought. therefore it blows my mind that he hasn’t started his solo career until now. better late than never i guess but holy shit this album is something ... read more

'Cheat Codes' was an album that I was highly anticipating from Danger Mouse & Black Thought, the singles had been consistently fantastic and very promising, the feature list was stacked, and I was really intrigued to see what these two greats could come up after supposedly 16 years of making this project, and to be fair I'm not one bit disappointed since the majority of what's offered on 'Cheat Codes' is really damn great. It's no masterpiece and it doesn't add much new but Danger Mouse ... read more

Holy shit, this is good! The dense yet free-flowing soulful aesthetic created by Danger Mouse is flawlessly complimented by Black Thoughts' sharp lyrics and smooth delivery. Furthermore, the features are absolutely incredible as is the consistency of this record. Definite AOTY candidate.

Black Thought has been a top 10 rapper for me for quite a while. As far as pure rapping ability goes, I’d put him in the same tier as guys like Andre 3000, Canibus, MF DOOM, Ras Kass, Biggie, Nas, and Pharoahe Monch. In other words, he's a GOAT. Plus not to mention tons of super classic songs with The Roots. This guy is truly something special, and has been for about 3 decades now. To see him still making incredible music is great.

I went into this wanting great beats, hard rapping, and ... read more

In what sounds like a homage to Hip-Hop, Black Thought brings tight flows and bars over amazing samples and beats.

Favourite: Aquamarine
Worst:

1. Sometimes - 9
[Really fantastic production here, the background vocals and the use of different sounds is fantastic. Lyrically the flow is good and just a really good track. Would have liked more of this tbh but can't complain]

2. Cheat Codes - 9
[Production again quite remarkable on this track. Lyrically quite nice again]

3. The Darkest Part - 10
[Once more you an hear the emotion poured into the production work, interesting story behind the track within the ... read more

I forgot how it feels to listen to albums that actually are true to the old school hip hop vibe. 'Cheat Codes' is a project that lives from authenticity, lyrical/production/sound wise.

Danger Mouse beats ages like a fine wine, some of his best production ever
Black Thought stands out on every single track
All of the features are carefully picked and work seamlessly
What's not to love?

I haven’t listened to many of the hip-hop releases of 2022. Not because I haven’t wanted to, it’s mainly because I haven’t seen many that have really jumped out at me. There’s only been one other and I still haven’t got around to listening to it mainly due to the fact that this one came out more recently (and I can put it in my albums that released in August video) and with the incredibly high praise I’m seeing it receive, I sat down and listened.

Man this sounds so fucking dusty.

It’s crazy how grainy this is. They fucking nailed that oldie sound. This Is so pleasant, so beautiful, so special. This just hits like an Instant classic.

Damn bruh.

FAV: Sometimes, Cheat Codes, The Darkest Part, No Gold Teeth, Because, Belize, Aquamarine, Identical Deaths, Strangers, Close to Famous, Saltwater & Violets and Lupitas

Checked this album out for a bunch of reasons, mainly cause of the MF DOOM and RTJ features on here. And I must say this was legit really good! Black Thought fucking killed whole thing with some great verses and lines. Features did pretty great, especially as mentioned the MF DOOM and RTJ verses were great! Danger Mouse killed it on production too, beats were all great as well, the samples on here were all immaculate! Sure, this isn't anything all that groundbreaking or anything, but overall, ... read more

I'm not gonna act like I'm the biggest Black Thought fan*, or DANGERDOOM fan, but the production throughout this whole album is fantastic and focused, and there really is something to say about the longevity of a rapper who could hold up in G.O.A.T. convo's back in the early 2000's as well as today accompanied with this 2022 release. I really enjoy this album and I'm sure I will only appreciate it more as it get grayer and colder outside. Black Thoughts bars are all phenomenal shit, I was ... read more

Even with all the hype that the singles had built, this still managed to surpass my expectations. Black Thought comes with another W in his catalog with the help of Danger Mouse with the suspenseful-like boom bap beats, creating an album that is 12 tracks of straight conscious rapping. It doesn’t overstay it’s welcome and every single feature on this album delivers in top tier form. This is definitely one of the best albums of this year.

Black Thought returns and recruits producer Danger Mouse for yet another glorious and thoughtful outing that doesn't fail to put your mind to work with intelligent lyrics and melancholic powerful production.

This album took my by surprise even if i already had high expectations for it and it didn't disappoint whatsoever. Black Thought is the type of rapper that can't make bad music, similar to Kendrick Lamar. Put him on good production and he'll deliver some masterly written verses left and ... read more

This is one of the best produced hip-hop albums in recent years without a doubt. However, Black Thought on this album is SO goddamn dull and uninteresting. Every feature is better than him every time. I mean, my god that DOOM feature was great, but why would I ever listen to the first half of the song again? While I did enjoy this, it's annoying that the "Main event" here is really the weakest part.

Strangers goes hard tho...after the first verse

When your album's beats are so on point that they rival the quality of Billy Woods' "Aethiopes", you know your record is special. Endless chemistry between Danger Mouse and Black Thought, near flawless production, and fantastic features make Cheat Codes an easy album to love.
