Burial is a genuine event, a coming-out party for a style of music that will probably have run its course in a year from now. It's also a record that stands to be remembered apart from its immediate context, one to be valued not as a subcultural apex but as a fully realized work.
Burial is most certainly not an album for the dancefloor – the most appropriate listening environment would be in a car driving through the city after dark whilst the rain pounds down and neon lights flicker outside.
What prevents Burial from being quite as spectacular as its strongest moments promise is simply its inconsistency-- what we have here is a brilliant EP padded out with sketches and noble failures.
Burial is the first great dubstep album, legitimizing a style -- a generally dark, emotive, and faceless dub offshoot of 2-step -- that had thus far been confined to 12" vinyl and the underground club scene.
It'll take work to get into for a lot of listeners, sure, but it's worth it ... this may not have been the best album of 2006, but it was definitely top 10.
I was surprised to find out how different this was from Untrue. This album is a lot more experimental, and focuses on building unique landscapes and atmospheres. It is way less catchy, but a lot more intriguing. That being said, it’s not super for me. Kind of boring as a MF at many points.
It seems like Burial always had a clear vision of what his creative output, since day one, would be like, in sonic palette terms. His self-titled debut album is a record on where Burial starts creating the foundation to what his magnum opus would be in a span of months. The bouncy, yet introspective beats, mixed with the barely recognizable vocal samples and his famous use of sampled percussion from video games during his early years.

i liked the tracks closer to untrue's vibe the most but the other ones weren't bad either
After hearing Burial’s recent Dreamfear / Boy Sent From Above and Streetlands EPs I was hooked. Seeing that his albums are his most loved work I tried them out. This one was first. Distant Lights was a good if slightly underwhelming start. The follow-up Spaceape is my favourite track. The odd vibe is executed very well thanks to The Spaceape’s great voice and cadence. I’m not crazy about anything I heard after that to be honest. A lot of this album is very samey techno stuff ... read more
Bleak, moody, skittish beats. Can imagine this soundtracking some youth drama set in London about street gangs and housing estates.
Burial just knows how to set atmosphere. Although not as good as untrue (which is a 10) Burial self titled still gets my mind flowing, as i am dreaming about walking down the street at 4 in the morning. These samples and drum beats are just hypnotic. And the ambient parts are just a small part that help this record work. Both of Burials albums are the stuff the night was made for.
