For metalcore, The Silent Circus doesn't necessary separate itself too much from the standard especially during the early 2000's, but with the incorporation of progressive metal and more emphasis on technical display which makes Between The Buried and Me's second studio album stand out a bit more than their debut, it comes off chaotic, heavy and aggressive and filled with energy and although it doesn't stand out above other acts during its time, they managed to make the sound super enjoyable ... read more
BTBAM show themselves to have the potential for pretty decent staying power with The Silent Circus.
The first two tracks are sisters, meant to be listened to one after the other, and they serve as a huge epic proggy metal track. Nothing absolutely legendary here, but powerful enough to recreate the feeling it intends for. Camilla Rhodes is a metal powerhouse for sure, although hidden behind rusty quality. Mordecai is a mind boggling face melter at first, but near the end, that cringe singing ... read more
oh my GOD. This is easily one of the best tech death albums ever. The production is great (compared to other albums of the time), the breakdowns are absolutely insane, and the screams and singing are some of Tommy’s best. I love how many of the tracks tie together to create a cohesive storyline that is both interesting and satisfying to listen to. Plus, there’s an acoustic song on here, and I love acoustic ballads in metal albums.
On this album BTBAM improves in nearly every way from their debut. Showcasing their progressive song structures and eclectic style, Silent Circus manages to be almost just as raw but also more focused and smartly written.
Between The Buried And Me's second album, The Silent Circus, follows up to the band's self titled debut, which finds them closest to a straight up metalcore group. Looking back at that album though, I was more intrigued than actually impressed, because while it was interesting to see their roots, it was mostly standard, by the numbers metalcore. While the metalcore is still very present, The Silent Circus folds elements of progressive metal into the mix, with more complex arrangements, more ... read more
For all the great moments on this album there are banal explorations that have not aged well. Bass is kind of muddy in the mix, but guitars have a much stronger roll on The Silent circus.
Mordecai, Lost Perfection, Destructo Spin, & Aesthetic are some of the best tracks on this great record
Some serious technical metalcore here. Pretty different from the debut, but a lot of welcome changes.
A lot of the record sounds like they threw every idea they had at the songs, but I think it works most of the time. It honestly has an almost schizophrenic feeling. It just bounces all over the place with all its sounds and directions.
Completely upped their abilities from the first record, but still doesn't have that progressive feel that they would eventually grow into. Would probably call ... read more
After the slamming first effort by the band I was expecting their sophomore album to be just as grooving but it wasn't. More brutal at times, it just don't seem to find it's real place. Constantly changing beat, never really taking time to install someting. When it does it pays off but most of the times it's confusion and repetition in blast beats, non-sense riffs and all that. Secial dislike to the calm section in 5 min of calm music in the middle of the tracklist. These moments on their first ... read more
This is the first music of BTBAM I was exposed to, in a Victory Records commercial featuring them and Darkest Hour. I'll never forget the ending part of Mordecai, it may be my favorite part of any song ever. This is one of their weaker albums, but that means nothing with a catalog as strong as theirs.
With an already great album to boot, Between The Buried and Me were already on their way to progressive greatness. It is now that we see them truly experimenting in the field that they sown from their first album and truly solidified their role as an awesome progressive metal band. The Silent Circus is definitely a lot more praised in the Prog community, and for good reasons, and those reasons are gonna be what I will talk about throughout this album’s run.
The album begins with a two ... read more
Generally speaking I like the old more metalcore BTBAM than the newer prog stuff. The exception is Colors which is a whole different animal, but this is my second favorite.
