Consequence of Sound

Unfortunately, although expectedly, this ragtag selection underwhelms when compared to her other work.

There's little on Lioness: Hidden Treasures that sounds throwaway, or like it should have never been released; but there's equally little that sounds absolutely essential.

A rather mismatched collection of tracks, as though they didn't try to make the produciton more cohesive for the release, the inconsistency in the quality of music makes this release for the late Amy Winehouse rather a missed opportunity. That being said, Amy's vocals still shine the brightest, as she always does. Personal favourite track: Body and Soul.

Our Day Will Come - 8.5/10
Between the Cheats - 7.5/10
Tears Dry (Original Version) - 9.5/10
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? - 9/10

For obvious reasons, this doesn't match Back to Black or even Frank. However, this is one of very few albums that has genuinely interesting demo versions of previously released tracks, and there are several songs songs here that are good enough to deserve a spot on a proper Amy Winehouse record.

Best tracks: Our Day Will Come // Tears Dry (Original Version) // Like Smoke // The Girl From Ipanema // Half Time // Best Friends, Right?

Worst track: Between the Cheats

It doesn't feel like a money-grab (even though it probably is for her dad), it really ... read more

Assorted mix of styles that not only showcase her talent but works as a definitive collage of what she was about, from neo-soul to classic R&B, jazz and even rocksteady. She was at her best in her abbiliy to make any song her own, and here it all sounds laid-back, pressure free, it feels like honest choices, artist's needs away from career calculations. A delight, a treasure indeed.
