Dreamy in places, touching in others, and enough beats in between to make Purple Naked Ladies a record that should garner fans from areas that maybe they wouldn't usually.
Turns out Odd Future benefits greatly from this duo anchoring their wild universe, as Purple Naked Ladies is one of the collective's more sensual and sensible releases to date.
This slippery debut from Odd Future’s Syd the Kyd and Matt Martians embarks on a journey into Twilight Zone pop, with a lovelorn story arc that transitions from giddy crushing to it’s-over melancholia.
Ladies is a strong debut and, overall, it presents a pretty unique environment to get lost in.
Purple Naked Ladies isn't going to do much for you if you closely follow the genres it dabbles in.
This is a record of frustratingly unfulfilled promise that will serve as a companion piece in the library of the O.F. completist
Without that blessed cohesion that is the groove, Purple Naked Ladies is an alternately jaggy and listless dream, rather than the narcotic romp it is meant to be.
While The Internet certainly appear capable of hitting the mark, Purple Naked Ladies falters because it attempts to be far more than it is, leaving it as nothing more than a broken collection of half-realized ideas.
Not only does the record fall flat in achieving the seductive feeling their lyrics imply, it also falls flat in presenting Syd Tha Kid as anything but a bratty, two-dimensional teenager.
When you boil it down, Purple Naked Ladies‘ biggest fault is that it’s generic. There’s little flavor and hardly any spice.
Some interesting ideas but the album loses steam in the ladder half and the whole LP feels kinda redundant. Some songs do feel jerky as well as the songwriting being kinda bland. Thankfully the band would address these problems in future releases.
They have some good ideas on here but it doesn't come together like the rest of their records do. Sounds a bit raw and unpolished still. Some tracks don't really go anywhere
