The Line of Best Fit

After a long road to fruition, Cool Dry Place arrives fully realised, endlessly clever, and refreshingly novel.

83
Consequence of Sound

As a debut release, Cool Dry Place is remarkable. Katy Kirby has crafted a series of captivating indie rock-pop tracks, all centered around a voice with clarity reminiscent of Sylvan Esso or Haley Heynderickx, but swift and whimsical movements that feel all Kirby’s own.

80
Mojo

It has taken years to create this album, but each song is perfectly realised.

80
Dork

It’s a collection of beautifully Phoebe Bridgers-esque songs that make you feel like you are the main character in a film. On the surface it’s upbeat, but underneath tells deep-rooted tales of life in the modern world.

80
AllMusic

Throughout, the star of the debut remains Kirby's inviting voice and hummable melodies, and, at less than 30 minutes, Cool Dry Place will leave many fans of the singer/songwriter tradition eager for more.

Northern Transmissions

Cool Dry Place delivers a package of emotions waiting to be untangled by each individual listener.

Beats Per Minute

Clocking in under 30 minutes with only nine tracks, Cool Dry Place is a lovely breeze of a listen, and truthfully, a nearly flawless record. Except for a couple of moments of autotune and lo-fi weirdness, Kirby generally plays it safe, musically, which leaves one wanting a tiny bit more from a talent like herself

76
Paste

In contrast with much of today’s folky indie-pop, which rests on the melancholy sway of dream pop, Cool Dry Place is unexpectedly groovy, with hooks and rhythms worming their way into hearts and minds in more ways than one.

70
FLOOD Magazine

Cool Dry Place feels special because Kirby conveys the magic of discovery.

Her voice is as clear as her intentions. This album does not pretend something that it's not. Chill, self-aware production and lyrics.

7.2/10

A very delicate and charming collection of singer-songwriter tracks, that succeeds in being interesting and not overly "singer-songwirtery" as some albums of this kind tend to be. "Cool Dry Place" knows its place and serves a nice portion of sweet vocals and instrumentation in a serene, but captivating way.

This refreshing debut doesn't offer anything special, but what makes it charming is that it doesn't try to. It's just Katy establishing what could be the sound that people will associate with her if she keeps doing what she does.
