"Waken" is an often unremarkable but passable idea of having the richness of a dream pop album with the accessibility of the lofi aesthetic. Despite not being incredibly good at both, Cuushe makes it entrancing and chill enough to more than pass.
Where previous records mostly hinted at the dancefloor through a steady, albeit buried, 4/4 beat, Waken outwardly embraces it. For the first time Cuushe sounds clear, there's obvious ebbs and flows to both her voice and the music that accompanies. The constant switch-ups of her fundamentals, as subtle as they might seem, mostly play to her favor, and even when they don’t it’s at least intriguing.
